Many applications in computer vision use Principal Components Analysis (PCA), for example, in camera calibration, stereo, localization and motion estimation. We present a new and fast PCA-based method to analyze optical snow. Optical snow is a complex form of visual motion that occurs when an observer moves through a highly cluttered 3D scene. For this category of motion field, no spatial or de...

Time resolved studies of colliding laser produced magnesium plasmas are performed using a pinhole camera. A ruby laser pulse is split into two beams using a movable glass wedge and focused onto a planar target or targets placed at 90° to each other. A gated pinhole camera provides an orthogonal view of the collision. Measurements with an aluminum filter allowed identification of soft x-ray prod...

In this thesis we have developed an improved framework for advanced feature detection algorithms in automatic fingerprint recognition systems. We have studied the factors relating to obtaining high performance feature points detection algorithm, such as image quality, segmentation, image enhancement, feature detection, feature verification and filtering. Fingerprint image quality is an importan...

Wedge Range Filter (WRF) proton spectrometers are routinely used on OMEGA and the NIF for diagnosing ρR and ρR asymmetries in direct- and indirect-drive implosions of D(3)He-, D2-, and DT-gas-filled capsules. By measuring the optical opacity distribution in CR-39 due to proton tracks in high-yield applications, as opposed to counting individual tracks, WRF dynamic range can be extended by 10(2)...

The particle-time-of-flight (pTOF) diagnostic, fielded alongside a wedge range-filter (WRF) proton spectrometer, will provide an absolute timing for the shock-burn weighted ρR measurements that will validate the modeling of implosion dynamics at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). In the first phase of the project, pTOF has recorded accurate bang times in cryogenic DT, DT exploding pusher, an...

Phylogenetic analysis of bacteria preserved within an ice wedge from the Fox permafrost tunnel was undertaken by cultivation and molecular techniques. The radiocarbon age of the ice wedge was determined. Our results suggest that the bacteria in the ice wedge adapted to the frozen conditions have survived for 25,000 years.

Future plasmonic integrated circuits with the capability of extremely high-speed data processing at optical frequencies will be dominated by the efficient optical emission (excitation) from (of) plasmonic waveguides. Towards this goal, plasmonic nanoantennas, currently a hot topic in the field of plasmonics, have potential to bridge the mismatch between the wave vector of free-space photonics a...

The wedge and left atrial pressures were compared in 1'2 subjects with congenital and aequired heart disease; all experiments were carried out with closed chest under basal conditions. A poor correlation between the wedge and left atrial pressures was mnoted in over half the patients. The wedge pressure is especially inaccurate in mitral stenosis with marked elevations in left atrial pressure.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial design has received substantial attention in recent years. Although various extensions to the original design have been proposed, no guidance is available on the design of stepped-wedge cluster randomised trials with interim analyses. In an individually randomised trial setting, group sequential methods can provide notable efficiency ga...
