We report the axial strain dependence of two types of all-fiber acousto-optic tunable filters based on flexural and torsional acoustic waves. Experimental observation of the resonant wavelength shift under applied axial strain could be explained by theoretical consideration of the combination of acoustic and optical effects. We discuss the possibility of suppressing the strain effect in the fil...

A modulator is reported in which an extensional acoustic wave is launched along a fiber Bragg grating. The acousto-optic superlattice effect causes an enhancement in reflectivity within a narrow spectral region on both sides of the Bragg wavelength. For a fixed acoustic propagation direction, the Doppler shift can be either positive or negative, depending on whether the wavelength of the incide...

We report on all-optical wavelength conversion of a 56 Gb/s differential quadrature phase shift keying signal and a 42.7 Gb/s on-off keying signal. Wavelength conversion is based on four-wave mixing effect in a 1 m long highly nonlinear GeAsSe chalcogenide fiber. The high nonlinearity of the fiber allows low-power penalty operation with a total average power of less than 60 mW.

A SOA-based multiwavelength fiber ring laser for fiber sensing network is introduced in the paper. According to the demand of our sensing network which is a six-channel WDM system, the output wavelength of our MFRL is in the band of 1537nm to 1547nm with a frequency space of 200GHz. In the experiments, stable output and good flatness are acquired. Factors that can influence the wavelength shift...

We report that the interference pattern of Young's double-slit experiment changes as a function of polarization in the sub-wavelength diffraction regime. Experiments carried out with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy reveal that diffracted waves from sub-wavelength-scale slits exhibit either positive or negative phase shift with respect to Gouy phase depending on the polarization. Theoretical ...

A volume Bragg grating recorded in photo-thermo-refractive glass was used to spectrally lock the emission from an 18-μm-wide interband cascade laser ridge to a wavelength of 3.12 μm. The spectral width of emission into the resonant mode is narrowed by more than 300 times, and the thermal wavelength shift is reduced by 60 times. While the power loss penalty is about 30%, the spectral brightness ...

We report on the spectroscopy of the 5s 1S0 (F = 9/2) → 5s5p 3P0 (F = 9/2) clock transition of Sr atoms (natural linewidth of 1 mHz) trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Recoilless transitions with a linewidth of 0.7 kHz as well as the vibrational structure of the lattice potential were observed. By investigating the wavelength dependence of the carrier linewidth, we determined the mag...

Based on the concept of sub-wavelength imaging through compensated bilayer of anisotropic metamaterials (AMMs), which is an expansion of the perfect lens configuration, we propose two dimensional prism pair structures of compensated AMMs that are capable of manipulating two dimensional sub-wavelength images. We demonstrate that through properly designed symmetric and asymmetric compensated pris...

We calculate the self-frequency shift experienced by a soliton in a dispersion-managed fiber that is due to the Raman effect, as well as the energy and frequency shifts that result from a collision of such solitons with different wavelengths. We find that dispersion management suppresses both types of frequency shift but does not significantly affect the energy shift that is accumulated over a ...
