Approximately one-quarter of circulating cobalamin (vitamin B-12) binds to transcobalamin (holoTC) and is thereby available for the cells of the body. For this reason, holoTC is also referred to as active vitamin B-12. HoloTC was suggested as an optimal marker of early vitamin B-12 deficiency >20 y ago. This suggestion led to the development of suitable assays for measurement of the compound an...

BACKGROUND Because reference values for vitamin B(12) concentrations and vitamin B(12)-binding capacities for pregnant women have not been established, the reference values for nonpregnant women are often applied to assess vitamin B(12) status. The aim of the present study was to describe ranges of biochemical indices of vitamin B(12) status, including red blood cell (RBC) vitamin B(12), satura...

Recently, we found and analyzed vitamin B(12) in some Korean traditional plant foods which had not reported, yet. This study was to investigate vitamin B(12) intake and its dietary sources and the vitamin B(12) status in the very old elderly Koreans. We measured serum vitamin B(12) level and estimated the amounts of vitamin B(12) intake from different dietary sources in female elderly Koreans a...

Transcobalamin-bound vitamin B(12), or holotranscobalamin (HoloTC), a biologically active form, is believed to be a sensitive marker of vitamin B(12) deficiency. We investigated the prevalence of vitamin B(12) deficiency in gastrectomized patients using HoloTC and total vitamin B(12) to determine the diagnostic utility of HoloTC. We enrolled 128 gastrectomized patients and measured serum HoloTC...

A third vitamin B(12) binding protein present in normal serum has been shown to participate in transport of labelled vitamin B(12) absorbed from the gut. All three vitamin B(12) binding proteins in serum were labelled at the same time after oral administration of vitamin B(12), implying that "free" vitamin B(12) reached the portal blood from the gut mucosa.
