Dissecting ventricular septal hematoma (DVSH) rarely occurs after repair of a ventricular septal defect (VSD) but can lead to serious complications such as septal rupture, myocardial rupture, cardiogenic shock, heart block, outflow obstruction, cardiac tamponade, abscess transformation, and death. This paper describes the diagnosis and management of acute, severe, left ventricular outflow tract...

OBJECTIVE The objective of our study was to determine the feasibility of early extubation and to identify the risk factors for delayed extubation in pediatric patients operated for ventricular septal defect closure. METHODS A prospective, observational study was carried out at our Institute. This study involved consecutive 135 patients undergoing ventricular septal defect closure. Patients we...

M-mode echocardiographic features are presented in four patients with membranous ventricular septal defect. The most consistent echo findings in all the patients were the presence of fuzzy, fluttering echoes of the tricuspid valve during systole. More careful echocardiographic evaluation of the tricuspid valve in ventricular septal defect is therefore recommended.

Ventricular septal defect, alone or in combination with other cardiac malformations, is the commonest form of congenital heart disease in man. Morphogenically, the ventricular septum is composed of three parts: (a) the conal septum, (b) the septum of the endocardial cushions, and (c) the muscular septum proper. Consequently, most cono-truncal abnormalities (transposition of the great arteries, ...

We have reviewed our experience of 29 patients with the association of ventricular septal defect and aortic regurgitation, 27 of whom have been treated surgically. Our present approach to the surgical management is outlined and the embryology and pathological anatomy are reviewed. The most common cause of aortic regurgitation was a prolapsed aortic valve cusp, which occurred in 19 patients. Ane...

Asymmetric septal hypertrophy, or ASH, is a genetically determined myocardial disorder that is transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. ASH is characterized by a disproportionately thickened ventricular septum that contains numerous hypertrophied, bizarrely-shaped and disorganized cardiac muscle cells. Disproportionate hypertrophy of the ventricular septum has also been observed in associati...
