4-Hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (4-HBA) are natural phenolic compounds, which present in many plants and have diverse biological properties. In this study, we examined effects of vanillin and 4-HBA on learning and memory function, cell proliferation, and neuroblast differentiation in the hippocampal dentate gyrus in a mouse model of scopolamine-induced amn...
In this study, the application of a response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the microencapsulation of vanillin as a nutraceutical was studied. Soy protein isolate and maltodextrin were used as a wall material. Microencapsulate of vanillin using spray drying with maltodextrin solutions at different concentration (5–15% wt), vanillin concentrations (0.1–0.4 %wt) and inlet temperature (180–...
BACKGROUND/AIMS The oxidation of xenobiotic-derived aromatic aldehydes with freshly prepared liver slices has not been previously reported. The present investigation compares the relative contribution of aldehyde oxidase, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde dehydrogenase activities in the oxidation of vanillin, isovanillin and protocatechuic aldehyde with freshly prepared liver slices. METHODS Vani...
Bioactive natural products play critical roles in modern drug development, especially anticancer agents. It has been widely reported that various pharmacological activities of such compounds are related to their antioxidant properties. Vanillin is a natural substance widely found in many plant species and often used in beverages, foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. Antioxidant and an...
BACKGROUND Curcumin and vanillin are the two useful compounds in food and medicine. Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate is an economical and ecofriendly reagent. METHOD Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate impregnated montmorillonite KSF clay and curcumin were subjected to microwave irradiation. RESULTS Microwave-induced bismuth nitrate-promoted synthesis of vanillin from curcumin has been accomplished in...
The recombinant strain P. pastoris GS115-lccC was used to produce laccase with high activity. Factors influencing laccase expression, such as pH, methanol concentration, copper concentration, peptone concentration, shaker rotate speed, and medium volume were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, laccase activity reached 12,344 U/L on day 15. The recombinant enzyme was purified by precipit...
Genes encoding vanillin dehydrogenase (vdh) and vanillate O-demethylase (vanAB) were identified in Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 using gene disruption and enzyme activities. During growth on vanillin or vanillate, vanA was highly upregulated while vdh was not. This study contributes to our understanding of lignin degradation by RHA1 and other actinomycetes.
IN THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 3,3'-dimethoxy-2,2'-(ethane-1,2-diyldioxy)dibenzaldehyde], C(18)H(18)O(6), prepared from 1,2-dibromo-ethane and ortho-vanillin in the presence of sodium carbonate, the two vanillin units are linked via a CH(2)-CH(2) bridge. The two benzene rings are inclined at a dihedral angle of 41.6 (5)°.
In this study, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFBF) was pretreated with alkali, and lignin was extracted for further degradation into lower molecular weight phenolic compounds using enzymes and chemical means. Efficiency of monomeric aromatic compounds production from OPEFBF lignin via chemical (nitrobenzene versus oxygen) and enzymatic [cutinase versus manganese peroxidase (MnP)] approaches was...
We isolated aromatics-degrading bacteria from the gut of a lower termite, Coptotermes formosanus, using a mineral salt medium containing various aromatic compounds as the sole carbon source. Two species, Burkholderia sp. strain VE22 and Citrobacter sp. strain VA53, were isolated by aerobic enrichment culture with veratraldehyde and vanillin, respectively. Strain VA53 could also grow and metabol...
