We construct SRB measures for endomorphisms satisfying conditions far weaker than the usual non-uniform expansion. As a consequence, the definition of a non-uniformly expanding map can be weakened. We also prove the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant measure for local diffeomorphisms, only assuming the existence of hyperbolic times for Lebesgue almost every point in the manifold.

the available shear correction factors have mainly been developed for homogeneous isotropic plates and/or assuming that no shear tractions are imposed on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. in the present research, a more general case of a circular functionally graded plate subjected to non-uniform normal and shear tractions at the top and bottom surfaces is considered. these non-uniform ...

We find a uniform semiclassical (SC) wave function describing coherent branched flow through a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), a phenomenon recently discovered by direct imaging of the current using scanned probed microscopy [M.A. Topinka, B.J. LeRoy, S.E.J. Shaw, E.J. Heller, R.M. Westervelt, K.D. Maranowski, and A.C. Gossard, Science 289, 2323 (2000)]. The formation of branches has been ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging [1] usually exploits the dependence of the resonance frequency (generally in the rf band) on the magnetic field strength to map spatial position onto a frequency spectrum. The magnetic field strength is given a known spatial dependence and the spins are uniformly excited with an rf field. The uniform rf field is generally produced inside a cylindrical rf...

We have searched the 1st-year WMAP W-Band CMB anisotropy map for evidence of cosmic strings. We have set a limit of δ = 8πGμ/c < 8.2× 10 at 95% CL for statistical search for a significant number of strings in the map. We also have set a limit using the uniform distribution of strings model in the WMAP data with δ = 8πGμ/c < 7.34 × 10 at 95% CL. And the pattern search technique we developed here...

We extract 11 genome-wide sets of breakpoint positions from databases on reciprocal translocations, inversions and deletions in neoplasms, reciprocal translocations and inversions in families carrying rearrangements and the human-mouse comparative map, and for each set of positions construct breakpoint distributions for the 44 autosomal arms. We identify and interpret four main types of distrib...

We investigate the relation between preimage multiplicity and topological entropy for continuous maps. An argument originated by Misiurewicz and Przytycki shows that if every regular value of a C1 map has at least m preimages then the topological entropy of the map is at least log m. For every integer, there exist continuous maps of the circle with entropy zero for which every point has at leas...

Cortical maps often contain global spatial structure: however, theoretical accounts for their development have generally concentrated on reproducing only local structure. We show that the elastic net model of cortical map formation can closely approximate the global structure of the ocular dominance column map observed in macaque primary visual cortex. A key component is the assumption of spati...

We construct an area preserving map from the cube to the unit sphere S, both centered at the origin. More precisely, each face Fi of the cube is first projected to a curved square Si of the same area, and then each Si is projected onto the sphere by inverse Lambert azimuthal equal area projection, with respect to the points situated at the intersection of the coordinate axes with S. This map is...

We present a new algorithm for shape from shading, inspired on the recently introduced disparity-based approach to photometric stereo. Assuming that the single input image will be matched to a second image through a uniform disparity eld, we construct an irradiance conservation equation and solve it for the matching image, via Green's function. When a linear expansion of the reeectance map is c...
