Machining-induced edge chipping damage represents a common challenge in ceramic applications. This paper reports on responses of zirconia materials with porous and dense microstructures to induced conventional ultrasonic vibration-assisted diamond machining. The machining-induced was evaluated using optical scanning electron microscopies. results show that produced these processes associated br...

Sample return and in-situ sampling and analysis is one of the major objectives of future NASA exploration missions. Existing drilling techniques are limited by the need for large axial forces, holding torques, and high power consumption. Lightweight robots and rovers have difficulties accommodating these requirements. To address these key challenges to the NASA objective of planetary in-situ ro...

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a near-field technique to generate high-resolution images of surfaces. A micro-fabricated elastic beam with an integrated sharp sensor tip at its end is scanned over the sample surface. With various dynamic modes, leading to Force Modulation Microscopy [1], Ultrasonic Force Microscopy [2], Atomic Force Acoustic Microscopy (AFAM) [3–5], Microdeformation Microscop...

Ultrasonic vibration and electrovibration can modulate the friction between a surface and a sliding finger. The power consumption of these devices is critical to their integration in modern mobile devices such as smartphones. This paper presents a simple control solution to reduce up to 68.8 % this power consumption by taking advantage of the human perception limits.

In the four previous parts of this series of articles, level measurement using a floating system, using pressure instruments, using radar waves and using ultrasonic waves were discussed. The instruments offered by Indumart company applicable for each method were also recommended. In the final part of this article, level measurement using capacitance, conductivity probes, vibration forks, therma...

A high-thrust screw-type piezoelectric ultrasonic motor with a three-wavelength exciting mode is proposed in this paper. The motor mainly includes a stator and a screw output shaft, and the stator is composed of twelve rectangular piezoelectric plates and a hollow metal elastomer with an internal thread. The stator can be excited to generate the combined micro ultrasonic vibration mode. With th...

AIM During clinical usage, scaler tips may become worn and reduced in length. It is unknown what effect wear has on the magnitude of scaler tip vibrations when they are utilized under typical clinical loads. The aim of this investigation was to assess the effect of simulated wear on ultrasonic scaler tip displacement amplitude, using a scanning laser vibrometer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A Cavitr...

An in-depth review on a new ultrasonic micro-droplet generator which utilizes megahertz (MHz) Faraday waves excited by silicon-based multiple Fourier horn ultrasonic nozzles (MFHUNs) and its potential applications is presented. The new droplet generator has demonstrated capability for producing micro droplets of controllable size and size distribution and desirable throughput at very low electr...
