In the present work, leaves of mangrove plant, Derris trifoliata was successively extracted with methanol and for characterization, the leaf extract was subjected to thin layer chromatography and high performance thin layer chromatography. Different compounds were isolated and the structure of one particular compound was elucidated by NMR, IR, UV and GC-MS spectra.

The 2-hydroxy fatty acids tend to yield streaks in thin-layer chromatography on silica gel plates. If potassium oxalate is included with binder-free silica gel, good spots are obtained. Similar difficulties are found in paper chromatography of the fatty acid derivatives of coenzyme A, especially with long-chain acids. The same thin-layer system gives good spots with these compounds.

Five sialic acid variants have been demonstrated in normal, 'transitional', and tumour extracts of human large bowel mucosa by thin-layer chromatography.
