We measure the spatiotemporal field of ultrashort pulses with complex spatiotemporal profiles using the linear-optical, interferometric pulse-measurement technique SEA TADPOLE. Accelerating and decelerating ultrashort, localized, nonspreading Bessel-X wavepackets were generated from a approximately 27 fs duration Ti:Sapphire oscillator pulse using a combination of an axicon and a convex or conc...

Predator-induced phenotypic plasticity has been widely documented in response to native predators, but studies examining the extent to which prey can respond to exotic invasive predators are scarce. As native prey often do not share a long evolutionary history with invasive predators, they may lack defenses against them. This can lead to population declines and even extinctions, making exotic p...

Laser-scanning two-photon microscopy offers well-known advantages for imaging deeper into living tissue, but even in relatively translucent organisms like the zebrafish or albino Xenopus tadpole it can be a powerful tool for studying brain development [1]. The visual system in the Xenopus tadpole utilizes both molecular guidance and activity-dependent cues to form appropriate connections [2]. N...

We discuss the role of the dilaton tadpole in the holographic description of non-supersymmetric gauge theories that are conformal in the planar limit. On the string theory side, the presence of the dilaton tadpole modifies the AdS background inducing a logarithmic running for the radius and the dilaton. Using the holographic prescription we compute the Wilson loop on the gravity side and find a...

We present a comprehensive study of the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons, as well as octet and decuplet baryons computed in O(a)-improved quenched lattice QCD. Results have been obtained using the nonperturbative definition of the improvement coefficient csw , and also its estimate in tadpole improved perturbation theory. We investigate effects of improvement on the incidence of excepti...

We study D = 4, N = 1, type IIA orientifold with orbifold group ZN and ZN × ZM . We calculate one-loop vacuum amplitudes for Klein bottle, cylinder and Möbius strip and extract the tadpole divergences. We find that the tadpole cancellation conditions thus obtained are satisfied by the Z4, Z8, Z ′ 8, Z ′ 12 orientifolds while there is no solution for Z3, Z7, Z6, Z ′ 6, Z12. The Z4 × Z4 type IIA ...

Transgenic tadpoles that express a dominant negative thyroid hormone (TH) receptor specifically in their skin undergo normal metamorphosis, with one exception: they retain a larval epidermis over the developing adult epithelium. TH-induced death of the tadpole epidermis is inhibited by the dominant negative TH receptor whereas the TH-induced response of the neighboring fibroblasts and the cells...
