The efficacy of a new dual simple bedside test--the spoon test--in demonstrating sudomotor skin derangements was assessed. The results were compared with those defined by the quinizarine sweat test. The advantages and disadvantages of these two above and other known similar tests are discussed.
Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal genetic disorder of Cystic Fibrosis Trans-membrane Conductance (CFTR) Regulator gene mutations. We aimed to investigate common mutations in CF patients and to assess its possible relationship with clinical presentations. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 36 CF patients who were referred to a tertiary ped...
Humans can register another person's fear not only with their eyes and ears, but also with their nose. Previous research has demonstrated that exposure to body odors from fearful individuals elicited implicit fear in others. The odor of fearful individuals appears to have a distinctive signature that can be produced relatively rapidly, driven by a physiological mechanism that has remained unexp...
Physiological significance of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), a putative co-transmitter of the cholinergic neuron innervating sweat glands, was investigated by its local effect on drug-induced sweating. VIP, methacholine chloride (MCH), or VIP plus MCH dissolved in 0.1 ml of 0.9% NaCl solution to a specified concentration was injected intradermally at the center of a forearm test area ...
The sweat test for the diagnosis of fibrocystic disease of the pancreas owes its origin to an observation made during the heat wave of 1948 in New York (Kessler and Andersen, 1951) that more than half of the children admitted to hospital with signs of heat prostration were cases of fibrocystic disease of the pancreas. Although the serum sodium and chloride concentrations were much reduced the c...
BACKGROUND In patients with symptoms suggestive of cystic fibrosis (CF) and intermediate sweat chloride values (30-60 mmol/l), extensive CFTR gene mutation analysis and nasal potential difference (NPD) measurement are used as additional diagnostic tests and a positive result in either test provides evidence of CFTR dysfunction. To define the phenotype of such patients and confirm the validity o...
Background and Aim: In order to best use from traditional medicine, world health organization suggested hygiene in making products and traditional healing method. Considering the great importance of different types of drug distillates and different uses of traditional & industrial, the amount of fungal and bacteria pollution in sweat chicory, Tp and forty traditional essences was studied in Bir...
The recognition of the electrolyte disturbance in the sweat of patients with fibrocystic disease by Darling, diSant' Agnese, Perera and Andersen (1953) led Shwachman, Leubner and Catzel (1955) to devise a simplified method of obtaining sweat for biochemical assay. In this method the patient is placed in a plastic bag up to the neck and covered with a blanket, the sweat being collected in a weig...
