Public health policies, including in Europe, are considering measures and recommendations to limit the intake of added or free sugars. For such policies to be efficient and monitored, a precise knowledge of the current situation regarding sugar intake in Europe is needed. This review summarizes published or re-analyzed data from 11 representative surveys in Belgium, France, Denmark, Hungary, Ir...
OBJECTIVES To investigate the contribution of ultra-processed foods to the intake of added sugars in the USA. Ultra-processed foods were defined as industrial formulations which, besides salt, sugar, oils and fats, include substances not used in culinary preparations, in particular additives used to imitate sensorial qualities of minimally processed foods and their culinary preparations. DESI...
diabetes and obesity are two common human disorders that affecting human health and invite various diseases and disorders in normal body functions. these diseases are very common worldwide. diabetes occurs when high blood sugar levels develop. this happens when body can’t make and use all of the insulin it needs to blood sugar normally to keep blood sugar levels as normal as possible to control...
For at least a thousand years sugar has been valued for its organoleptic and preservative properties and as an important trading commodity. The furore surrounding the report from WHO and FAO (1) which included a recommended upper limit for intake of free sugars, suggests that sugar is still of huge importance in the global economy. The article by Steyn and colleagues (pp. 599–608) explains a gu...
The sugars in the endosperm of a developing seed have many potential roles, including the supply of carbon to the developing embryo and controlling gene expression in it. Our understanding of their metabolism is, however, fragmentary and is confined to a very few species (especially Vicia spp.). To develop a quantitative understanding of the regulation of sugars in seeds of oilseed rape (Brassi...
Intake of added sugars, mainly fructose and sucrose, has been associated with risk factors for cognitive impairment, such as obesity, the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. The objective of this analysis was to examine whether habitual intakes of total sugars, added sugars, sugar-sweetened beverages or sweetened solid foods are associated with cognitive function. The present study included...
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of rootstocks on fruit sugars, organic acids, and carotenoids. The contents of sugars and organic acids in fruits were determined by HPLC. Total acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and pH value of the juice were also evaluated. Total carotenoids and chlorophylls contents were measured using a spectrophotometer. The content of ethylene in fruits was ...
Lambert et al. (Reports, 19 February 2010, p. 984) reported that silicate ions catalyze the formation and stabilization of four- and six-carbon sugars from simple sugars, suggesting a possible prebiotic pathway for the synthesis of biologically important sugars. Here, we show that silicate has minimal impact in these respects, especially when compared to borate minerals.
