Diel vertical migration of zooplankton has been proposed to be a significant contributor to local and possibly large-scale fluid transport in the ocean. However, studies of this problem to date have been limited to order-of-magnitude estimates based on first principles and a small number of field observations. In this work, we leverage the phototactic behavior of zooplankton to stimulate contro...

High-resolution twoand three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed of first-mode internal gravity waves interacting with a shelf break in a linearly stratified fluid. The interaction of nonlinear incident waves with the shelf break results in the formation of upslope-surging vortex cores of dense fluid (referred to here as internal boluses) that propagate onto the shelf. This paper pr...

Convection of an internally heated fluid, confined between top and bottom plates of equal temperature, is studied by direct numerical simulation in two and three dimensions. The unstably stratified upper region drives convection that penetrates into the stably stratified lower region. The fraction of produced heat escaping across the bottom plate, which is one half without convection, initially...

Howard's semi-circle theorem is generalized for three-dimensional disturbances in a non-Boussinesq stratified fluid with a mean flow varying horizontally and vertically. In case of Boussinesq approximation Howard's and Rayleigh's theorem are extended for three-dimensional disturbances in a fluid with a mean flow varying only with respect to the latitude.

A phenomenological model for turbulent mixing in a stratified fluid is presented. This model describes the evolution of the local probability distribution for the fluid density. It is based on an analogy between the mixing of vorticity in 2D turbulent flows and the mixing of density in (3D) turbulent flows.

Aiming to study the characteristics and mechanism of oil-water two-phase flow, based on method dissipative particle dynamics (DPD), meso-scale models pressure-driven flow in quartz slits with width 5-15 nm were simulated. Water is driving phase. The results show that, as liquid flew, it stratified gradually. stratification came earlier width, force increased. slit 5 was slug while velocity prof...

We derive the torque on a spheroid of an arbitrary aspect ratio $\kappa$ sedimenting in linearly stratified ambient. The analysis demarcates regions parameter space corresponding to broadside-on and edgewise (longside-on) settling limit $Re, Ri_v \ll 1$, where $Re = \rho_0UL/\mu$ $Ri_v =\gamma L^3g/\mu U$, Reynolds viscous Richardson numbers, respectively, are dimensionless measures importance ...
