In this paper we present a robust controller design methodology for vehicle rollover prevention utilizing active steering. Control design is based on keeping the magnitude of the vehicle load transfer ratio (LTR) below a certain level in the presence of driver steering inputs; we also develop an exact expression for LTR. The proposed controllers have a proportional-integral structure whose gain...

In this paper we consider a limited capacity Markovian queueing system with two heterogeneous servers subjected to varying catastrophic intensity. The transient solution of the model has been obtained and various measures of performance have been computed numerically with the help of simulation technique. The steady state solution of the system has also been provided.

A technique to design a dynamic continuous controller to regulate a class of full-actuated mechanical systems with dry friction is proposed. It is shown that the control eliminates the steady-state error and is robust with respect to parameter uncertainties. A simple method to find the parameters of the controller is also proposed. Moreover, an application of this result to control a 2-DOF unde...

This paper reports the numerical determination of the entropy generation due to heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid friction in steady state for laminar double diffusive convection, in an inclined enclosure with heat and mass diffusive walls, by solving numerically the mass, momentum, species conservation and energy balance equations, using a Control Volume FiniteElement Method. The influenc...

The exact solution is found for the Stefan problem of inwards freezing of a nonhomogeneous cylinder whose specific heat and latent heat depend upon the inverse square of the radial distance. The freezing time for the corresponding annular cylinder is found exactly. The validity of the pseudo-steady-state approximation for the solvable cylinder problem is verified explicitly. It is argued that t...

In this paper, a new four-point probe, double spiral heating element configuration for micromachined gas sensors is proposed and a simple analytical model of the steady-state thermal behavior of the microheater is presented. A testing procedure is suggested, based on simple two-wire and four-wire resistance versus power measurements, together with an iterative extraction procedure for the param...

By employing an analytical model for a constantvorticity distributed vortex, namely, the ellipsoidal vortex embedded in a constant buoyancy frequency shear flow, the problem of the passive scalar transport through the vortex’s boundary is addressed. Since the model’s governing equations do not allow such transition to occur, we implement a low-scale diffusion process into the vortex model. Taki...

A set of pragmatic experimental investigations were initially undertaken using three straight flues attached to glass doored solid fuel appliances. Each system was built to satisfy existing regulatory requirements and instrumented with type K thermocouples at fixed locations within each flue. The fire gas temperatures were analysed for periods of steady state operation. It was concluded that ex...

We extend the classical treatment of the Ince equation to include the effect of a fractional derivative term of order a > 0 and amplitude c. A Fourier expansion is used to determine the eigenvalue curves að Þ in function of the parameter , the stability domains, and the periodic stable solutions of the fractional Ince equation. Two important observations are the detachment of the eigenvalue cur...

A complex variable boundary element method is proposed for solving numerically the axisymmetric steady-state problem of heat conduction in a nonhomogeneous isotropic solid. To assess the validity and the accuracy of the method, it is applied to solve specific cases of the problem. The numerical solutions obtained agree well with known solutions.
