A 15-year-old female patient with progressive pulsatile exophthalmos caused by intraorbital encephalocele was evaluated with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in our clinic. She had no history of trauma or reconstructive surgery. When she was a little girl, she had undergone surgery for congenital glaucoma on the right eye. On the three-dimensional image of CT, a hyp...

The petroclival area is a complex region situated at the junction of adjacent parts of sphenoid, temporal and occipital bones. A variety of pathologies may originate in the petroclival area, including meningiomas, schwannomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, carcinomas, aneurysms and others. Developments in skull base surgery, neuroradiology and intensive care have led to a breakthrough in the mana...

Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach to the sellar region yields an alternative to classical microsurgical approaches. Endoscopes provide images that differ from microscopic view. This study aimed to highlight surgical landmarks and their anatomical relationships for pituitary surgery through endoscopic perspective. Ten sides of five adult cadaveric heads with red-colored latex injecte...

Introduction: Isolated sphenoid sinus inflammatory diseases (ISSIDs) are responsible for about 75% of isolated sphenoid sinus opacifications. Computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) should be used in a complementary manner for the assessment of ISSIDs. This evaluation sheds some light on the extent of disease and intracranial and intra-orbital involvement. ...

The introduction of new surgical techniques is often challenging. Laparoscopic surgery was enthusiastically adopted when first introduced but suffered bad publicity due to an increased complication rate when compared with the earlier ‘open’ surgical procedures that it had replaced. It is now inconceivable that surgeons would routinely offer patients ‘open’ cholecystectomy and laparoscopy has be...

AIM Virtual endoscopy (VE) is the navigation of a 3D model reconstructed from radiological image data. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the role and accuracy of the virtual endoscopy realized using commercially available software, OsiriX, as a method of planning of surgical interventions. MATERIAL AND METHODS The computed tomographies of 22 patients with pituitary adenomas proposed for en...

The purpose of this study is to determine the anatomical features of the sphenoid sinus using computerized tomography (CT). 100 Sudanese subjects were investigated for CT sinuses; Characterization of the sphenoid sinus and seven horizontal and vertical measurements were evaluated. Onodi cell was found in 13 subjects, 10 of them were sellar and 3 were pre-sellar. Pneumatization was of the sellar...

Isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele is a rare entity. Here we report a case of isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele in a 9 years old girl presenting with unilateral blindness and without any sinonasal complaints. C.T. scan revealed an isolated sphenoid sinus mucocele which was managed endoscopically. A brief review of literature is also included.

Objective. We aim to describe the first case in the literature of allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) presenting with hyperprolactinemia due to compression of the pituitary gland. Case Presentation. A 37-year-old female presented with bilateral galactorrhea and occipital headaches of several weeks. Workup revealed elevated prolactin of 94.4, negative pregnancy test, and normal thyroid function. MRI...

BACKGROUND Intrasphenoidal encephaloceles are extremely rare findings. Sternberg's canal is a lateral craniopharyngeal canal resulting from incomplete fusion of the greater wings of the sphenoid bone with the basisphenoid. It acts as a weak spot of the skull base, which may lead to develop a temporal lobe encephalocele protruding into the lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus (SS). CASE DESCRI...
