Aquatic organisms respond to environmental challenges such as thermal stress with the rapid induction of highly conserved polypeptides known as stress proteins or heat shock proteins (Hsps). Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) is an important environmental stressor in marine ecosystems. Here, we present results of experiments conducted with the marine copepod Acartia tonsa to follow t...

Both heliophysical and anthropogenic (wastewater) effects on zooplankton biomass and abundance of the Imandra Lake (the largest subarctic lake at Kola Peninsula, Russia) were investigated during the 1990 - 2003 period. We used different indexes of solar activity (sunspot numbers and UV- radiation values) as heliophysical factors. Information about UV- radiation values was derived from satellite...

We present new calibrations of the widely used Hα , [OII] , and UV luminosity vs. star formation rate (SFR) relations. Using our evolutionary synthesis code GALEV we compute the different calibrations for 5 metallicities, from 1/50 solar up to 2.5 solar. We find significant changes in the calibrations for lower metallicities compared to the standard calibrations using solar input physics.

BACKGROUND Solar elastosis adjacent to melanomas in histologic sections is regarded as an indicator of sun exposure, although the associations of UV exposure and phenotype with solar elastosis are yet to be fully explored. METHODS The study included 2,589 incident primary melanoma patients with assessment of histologic solar elastosis in the population-based Genes, Environment, and Melanoma s...

Title of Dissertation: THE EFFECTS OF SOLAR ULTRAVIOLET-B ON THE PROTEOME AND ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE SYSTEMS IN SOYBEAN LEAVES Chenping Xu, Doctor of Philosophy, 2007 Directed By: Associate Professor Joe H. Sullivan Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Stratospheric ozone depletion has caused an increase in the amount of ultravioletB (UV-B) radiation reaching the earth's surface....

Within the sheltered creeks of Cádiz bay, Ulva thalli form extended mat-like canopies. The effect of solar ultraviolet radiation on photosynthetic activity, the composition of photosynthetic and xanthophyll cycle pigments, and the amount of RubisCO, chaperonin 60 (CPN 60), and the induction of DNA damage in Ulva aff. rotundata Bliding from southern Spain was assessed in the field. Samples colle...

There is an ongoing debate how to balance between beneficial and adverse effects of UV-exposure. On the one hand, solar UV-radiation represents the most important environmental risk factor for the development of non-melanoma skin cancer. Therefore, sun protection is a key principle to prevent these malignancies, especially in risk groups. On the other hand, artificial or solar UV-radiation is r...

Titan's geometric albedo varied noticeably from 1972 to 1978, in phase with variations in solar activity [Lockwood and Thompson, 1979]. We carry out a series of radiative transfer and aerosol formation calculations in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the following scenario for these secular brightness changes: solar activity changes, especially in the UV output of the Sun, result in alte...

We assessed the influence of springtime solar UV-B radiation that was naturally enhanced during several days due to ozone depletion on biomass production and photosynthesis of vascular plants along the Antarctic Peninsula. Naturally growing plants of Colobanthus quitensis (Kunth) Bartl. and Deschampsia antarctica Desv. were potted and grown under filters that absorbed or transmitted most solar ...
