Various cultural practices, including the use of cover and rotational crops, composts, tillage systems, and others have been promoted as management options for enhancing soil quality and health. All cultural practices are known to directly or indirectly affect populations of soilborne pathogens and the severity of their resultant root diseases. Soil biology is a major component and contributes ...

Here we present a chemical-biology study in the model soil bacterium Paracoccus denitrificans, where we show ligand-specific control of nitrate assimilation. Stabilization of a G-quadruplex in the promoter region of the nas genes, encoding the assimilatory nitrate/nitrite reductase system, is achieved using known quadruplex ligands and results in attenuation of gene transcription.

Yen et al. (1) propose that O 2 – ions puta-tively formed in the soil of Mars, not microorganisms , represent " the most straightforward explanation " of my 1976 Viking labeled release (LR) life detection results. Data from radioactive organic nutrients added to martian soil (2), however, challenge that conclusion. In the data reported by Yen et al. [figure 3 of (1)], O 2 – radicals lose only 1...

*Correspondence: Lars Olof Björn, Department of Biology, Molecular Cell Biology, Lund University, Sölvegatan 35, SE-22362 Lund, Sweden e-mail: [email protected] Guangdong Province in China runs a risk of gradually increasing pollution of its agricultural land and, as a consequence, toxic agricultural products. We concentrate here on the situation for cadmium, copper, and lead. For the...
