During the winter of 1975-1976, snowfall from the plumes of large natural-draft cooling towers of power plants has been observed. Snow accumulations up to 2.5 centimeters have been found on the ground at extended distances from the cooling towers, and visibility has been restricted to less than 1600 meters in the tower plume near ground level.

Progress in understanding how terrestrial ice volume is linked to Earth s orbital configuration has been impeded by the cost of simulating climate system processes relevant to glaciation over orbital time scales (10–10 years). A compromise is usually made to represent the climate system by models that are averaged over one or more spatial dimensions or by threedimensional models that are limite...

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is predicted to experience increases in air temperature, increases in snowfall, and decreases in monsoon rains; however, there is currently a paucity of data that examine the ecological responses to such climate changes. In this study, we examined the effects of increased air temperature and snowfall on: 1) water use partitioning by different plant functional groups, an...

[1] High-elevation ice caps develop an archive of atmospheric constituents and properties through the accumulation of snowfall. The timing of precipitation events, therefore, fundamentally governs the environmental information that ice core records can provide. These events are often highly seasonal, as are various postdepositional processes influencing the snow’s physical and chemical properti...

Assessing the effects of climate change on threatened species requires moving beyond simple bioclimatic models to models that incorporate interactions among climatic trends, landscape change, environmental stochasticity, and species life history. Populations of marten (Martes americana) and lynx (Lynx canadensis) in southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States represent peninsular ext...

The loss of Arctic sea-ice has been implicated with severe cold and snowy mid-latitude winters. However, the mechanisms a direct link remain elusive due to limited observational evidence. Here we present atmospheric water vapour isotope measurements from Finland during ‘the Beast East’—a anticyclonic outbreak that brought heavy snowfall freezing across Europe in February 2018. We find an anomal...
