Context: “Code smell” is commonly presented as indicative of problems in design of object-oriented systems. However, some empirical studies have presented findings refuting this idea. One of the reasons of the misunderstanding is the low number of studies focused on the role of human on code smell detection. Objective: Our aim is to build empirical support to exploration of the human role on co...
BACKGROUND In primary care and epidemiological studies of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), symptom-based diagnosis is common, yet limited, because endoscopic and radiological signs are not considered. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the correlation between symptoms and objective findings of CRS to improve its symptom-based diagnosis for primary care and epidemiological studies by using data from a large-...
During the last few decades a significant literature has evolved, suggesting that sensory dysfunction, particularly smell and taste dysfunction, can be early markers for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and neuropsychiatric diseases including ADHD and Schizophrenia, all diseases that involve dopaminergic pathology. Smell loss and taste dysfunction appear in clinica...
In philosophical discussions of the secondary qualities, color has taken center stage. Smells, tastes, sounds, and feels have been treated, by and large, as mere accessories to colors. We are, as it is said, visual creatures. ORCHIDS is an intrusion detection tool based on techniques for fast, on-line model-checking. ORCHIDS detects complex, correlated strands of events with very low overhead in practice, although its detection algorithm has worstcase exponential time complexity. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we explain the salient features of the basic model-checking algorithm in an intuitive way, as...
For many of us, when faced with a dangerous situation, our first reaction might be to yell and scream or in some way vocally communicate the danger to others. However, unbeknownst to us, we are also likely communicating the danger in a more subtle way. Plants and animals have evolved a highly specialized mechanism for alerting their own kind to the presence of a predator, injury or stress. The ...
Clinical features cannot differentiate rotavirus gastroenteritis from other types of diarrhoea. Sixty eight stool specimens were examined by nurses on an infant gastroenteritis ward. Of these, 69% were correctly classified by smell alone. The results are significant (p = 0.009) and support the suggestion that rotavirus stools have a characteristic smell.
