Two patients with an atypical form of band keratopathy following long-term pilocarpine treatment are described. The keratopathy is thought to have resulted from the presence of the preservative phenylmercuric nitrate in the pilocarpine drops. Symptoms of reduced acuity, visual haloes, and recurrent epithelial erosions were relieved by removal of the opacities.

The Bay of Quinte, a Z-shaped embayment at the northeastern end of Lake Ontario, has a long history of eutrophication problems primarily manifested as spatially extensive algal blooms and predominance of toxic cyanobacteria. The purpose of this study was to identify the structural changes of the phytoplankton community induced by two environmental alterations: point-source phosphorus (P) loadin...

OBJECTIVE This study examines the effect of the force with which a vibrating handle is gripped on the temporary threshold shift of vibratory sensation (TTSv) induced by hand-arm vibration. METHODS Six healthy subjects gripped a handle vibrating with a 1.3 octave-band vibration, with a central frequency of 200 Hz and an intensity of 39.2 m/s2. Exposure was for 1 min and 10 min, respectively. G...

Ninety-four mandibular second molars with scheduled endodontic treatment were exa...

Caffeine treatment of growing wheat tissues was used to form binucleate or polyploid cells; preprophase microtubules in subsequent division cycles in these and some other abnormal cells were then examined. In root tips, binucleate cells or those with greatly enlarged nuclei usually contained one transverse preprophase band of microtubules; sometimes this was slightly asymmetrical or skew, and l...

The freezing of food is one of the most significant applications of refrigeration. Numerous semi-analytical/ empirical methods for predicting food freezing times have been proposed. Therefore, a quantitative evaluation of selected semi-analytical/empirical food freezing time prediction methods is provided in two parts. This report focuses on methods that apply to regularly shaped food items, wh...

When economists first turned to applied benefit-cost analysis in the 1930s and 1940s, prices were the only widely accepted measure of benefits. Perhaps surprisingly, economists did not consider measures like consumer surplus, which seemed quite foreign. Consequently, when they turned to nonmarket valuation for goods like outdoor recreation, their constructed demand curves seemed less informativ...
