This paper presents a cross-language retrieval system which integrates shallow parsing and lexical semantic databases in an interactive approach to information access. At indexing time, the system extracts a list of phrases for every language in the collection. At search time, the system bridges the gap between the user's query and the relevant phrases in the collection in any language, expandi...

We prove upper and lower bounds on the size of the largest square grid graph that is a subgraph, minor, or shallow minor of a graph in the form of a larger square grid from which a specified number of vertices have been deleted. Our bounds are tight to within constant factors. We also provide less-tight bounds on analogous problems for higher-dimensional grids.

The weevil Oromia thoracica n. sp. from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) is described and compared to its closest allies. It can easily be distinguished by less sculptured elytra, its differently shaped antennal scrobe, and by the pronotum not constricted anteriorly and expanded over the head. Some ecological data are also provided, and considerations on the fauna occurring in the mesovoid shallow...

The origin of high background electron concentration (n) in InxGa1−xN alloys has been investigated. A shallow donor was identified as having an energy level (ED1) that decreases with x (ED1 = 16 meV at x = 0 and ED1 = 0 eV at x ∼ 0.5) and that crossover the conduction band at x ∼ 0.5. This shallow donor is believed to be the most probable cause of high n in InGaN. This understanding is consiste...

We study the issue of porting a known NLP method to a language with little existing NLP resources, specifically Hebrew SVM-based chunking. We introduce two SVM-based methods – Model Tampering and Anchored Learning. These allow fine grained analysis of the learned SVM models, which provides guidance to identify errors in the training corpus, distinguish the role and interaction of lexical featur...

Shallow trench isolation (STI) has become the most promising isolation scheme for ULSI applications. However, the trench isolation suffers from dislocations and oxidation induced stacking faults. Such faults are typically located near trench edges. These STI faults increase the junction leakage current and may turn-on the parasitic STI MOSFET resulting in significant leakage current through the...

Background Often called the rainforests of the sea, coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, but this diversity is in trouble. Recently, coral reefs are thought to be experiencing a worldwide decline from increases in pollution and global temperatures, and certain coral reef ecosystems are more threatened than others (Jackson 2010). Coral reefs are considered to be one of th...

Background: Three groups of factors related to topography, geology and hydrology have influence on the triggering of shallow landslides in soil material. In this paper a single representative factor (T-factor) for the topography is proposed, which can be used to define threshold values for the possibility of shallow soil slides. This study was carried out in the Dayi area, Guizhou Province, Chi...

In applying word-based dependency parsing such as Universal Dependencies (UD) to Japanese, the uncertainty of word segmentation emerges for defining a word unit of the dependencies. We introduce the following hierarchical word structures to dependency parsing in Japanese: morphological units (a short unit word, SUW) and syntactic units (a long unit word, LUW). This paper describes the results o...

To investigate the contributions of taggers or chunkers to the performance of a deep syntactic parser, Weighted Constraint Dependency Grammars have been extended to also take into consideration information from external sources. Using a weak information fusion scheme based on constraint optimization techniques, a parsing accuracy has been achieved which is comparable to other (stochastic) parsers.
