The independent and joint associations of serum selenium and vitamin A (retinol) and E (alpha tocopherol) concentrations with the risk of death from cancer were studied in 51 case-control pairs--that is, 51 patients with cancer, each paired with a control matched for age, sex, and smoking. Case-control pairs came from a random sample of some 12000 people aged 30-64 years resident in two provinc...

The work aimed at determining to what degree cattle herds were threatened with selenium deficiency on the basis of the concentration of this element in soil, feeds, and the blood serum of dry and lactating cows (in the 2, 4, and 6 week of drying, and in the 2, 4, and 6 week of lactation, respectively). The analysis of cow’s body supply with selenium showed that selected dairy cattle farms in th...

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate serum selenium levels and mean platelet volume in children who experience simple febrile convulsion. METHODS The study comprised 42 patients diagnosed with simple febrile convulsions and a control group of 30 healthy children. Blood samples were taken following a febrile convulsion. Selenium levels in the serum of both the patients and control subjects w...

Selenium is a trace element which plays a vital role in many metabolic functions and in particular is an integral part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. It may be involved in the prevention of a number of diseases including cardiovascular diseases and cancer, which are the main causes of death in Singapore with ethnic differences. The National University of Singapore Heart Study...

BACKGROUND Selenium is an essential trace element found in cereals, wheat, dairy products, meat, and fish. This micronutrient may prevent carcinogenesis through several biochemical pathways; one suggested pathway is enhanced apoptosis. OBJECTIVES The relation between selenium and colorectal adenomas was evaluated because the colorectal adenoma is the established precursor lesion of most color...

Some observational studies have shown that elevated serum selenium levels are associated with reduced prostate cancer risk; however, not all published studies support these results. A literature search of PubMed, Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Library up until September 2016 identified 17 studies suitable for further investigation. A meta-analysis was conducted on these studies to investigat...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of selenium supplementation on the selenium status and selenoenzyme, especially the activity and mRNA expression of type 1 deiodinase (D1) in mice with excessive iodine (EI) intake and to explore the mechanism of selenium intervention on iodine-induced abnormities. METHODS Weanling female BALB/c mice were given tap water or 3 mg/L of iodine or supplemented ...

This fluorometric procedure for determining selenium in human serum or urine is sensitive (requiring only 0.4 mL of sample), accurate, simple, and can be performed on several samples concurrently. Using this technique, we found a mean selenium concentration in the serum of normal Canadian men of 142.9 (SD 16.1) micrograms/L. The mean urinary excretion rate was 124.5 (SD 76.0) micrograms/day.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of soybean selenium proteinate on Se tissue retention and meat quality in pigs. In group A (n = 11) the mixtures were supplemented with soybean selenium proteinate, in group B (n = 11) with sodium selenite and in group C (n = 11) with Se-enriched yeast (0.3 mg Se per kg in all groups). The use of soybean selenium proteinate resulted i...

PURPOSE It has been suggested that selenium deficiency is a risk factor for several cancer types. We conducted a case-control study in Szczecin, a region of northwestern Poland, on 95 cases of lung cancer, 113 cases of laryngeal cancer and corresponding healthy controls. METHODS We measured the serum level of selenium and established genotypes for four variants in four selenoprotein genes (GP...
