Salmonella serotypes names, isn't it? Surely, this is because the naming system of Salmonella serotypes is by far the most scientist friendly. Traditionally , most Salmonella serotypes have been named after geographic locations. We decided to explore the geographic locations to which Salmonella serotypes refer and describe some unexpected twists in the naming scheme. We found that 93% (n = 1,47...

From 2003 to 2005, we prospectively collected 118 isolates of pneumococci belonging to 7 serotypes to investigate their competence under the influence of the synthetic competence-stimulating peptides. The degree of competence of the various serotypes differed significantly. Serotype 6B had the highest competence, followed by serotypes 14, 19F, 9V, 23F, 3, and 18C. Isolates belonging to serotype...

Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus that is characterized by substantial genetic diversity. The various serotypes of rotavirus have been determined by the presence of neutralizing epitopes on the outer capsid of the protein shell. At present, 5 rotavirus serotypes (G1, G2, G3, G4, G9) are the predominant circulating strains, accounting for approximately 95% of strains worldwide, although t...

Mannan-binding lectin (MBL), L-ficolin, and H-ficolin are pattern recognition molecules of the innate immune system. We investigated their ability to bind to different serotypes and noncapsulated variants of two gram-positive bacterial species, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. MBL did not bind to capsulated S. aureus or capsulated S. pneumoniae but did bind to a noncapsulated...

BACKGROUND Pneumococcal diseases remain a leading cause of vaccine-preventable death worldwide in children <5 years of age. The seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was approved in 2001 in Europe and was introduced into the national immunization programmes of many European countries from 2006-2008. In 2009, higher-valent PCVs (PCV10 and PCV13) became available, replacing PCV7 from...

Six multiplex-compatible PCR primers were designed to distinguish Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes within serogroup 18 from culturable/nonculturable pneumococcal specimens, with no cross-reactivity with other serotypes and respiratory organisms. These primers will aid in the generation of better data on vaccine/nonvaccine serotypes in invasive and carriage pneumococcal surveillance and contri...

conclusions our study illustrates the importance of constantly monitoring the prevalent serotypes in any region in order to aid in the development of more effective vaccines. results our results revealed that in egypt, currently, the most prevalent serotypes were serogroup 6 and serotype 19f as they represented 58% of all isolates. high rates of resistance were found to different antibiotic cla...

Capsular serotypes of 225 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates in Taiwan were identified by using PCR. Patients infected with K1 serotypes (41 isolates) had increased community-onset bacteremia, more nonfatal diseases and liver abscesses, lower Pittsburgh bacteremia scores and mortality rates, and fewer urinary tract infections than patients infected with non-K1/K2 serotypes (147 isolates).

Globally, human rotavirus (RV) remains the most common cause of severe diarrhea in children, causing 453,000 deaths per year and proximately 2.4 million hospitalization among children aged less than 5 years, with a maximum incidence in the developing countries [1-3]. Transmissions of RVs occur mainly via fecal-oral contact but it also might be transmitted by respiratory spread [4,5]. RV group A...

Background: Dengue virus is transmitted by the mosquito species Aedes aegypti and causes dengue fever. The single positive-stranded RNA of family Flaviviridae belongs to genus Flavivirus. There four (DENV) serotypes. (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4). Each has altered interactions with antibodies in human blood serum. Materials Methods: In study, we reported that comparative study serotypes alon...
