Caulobacter vibrioides T5M6 is a Gram-negative strain that strongly solubilizes selenium (Se) mineral into Se(IV) and was isolated from a selenium mining area in Enshi, southwest China. This strain produces the phytohormone IAA and promotes plant growth. Here we present the genome of this strain containing a large number of genes encoding resistances to copper and antibiotics.

Selenium is of fundamental importance to human health. It is an essential component of several major metabolic pathways, including thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defence systems, and immune function. The decline in blood selenium concentration in the UK and other European Union countries has therefore several potential public health implications, particularly in relation to the chronic...

Three antioxidant food supplements were analysed for selenium (Se) and its species. Sample A main constituents were coenzyme Q10, selenium (as medical yeast), vitamin C and natural vitamin E. The product is used for maintaining health and strengthening physical and mental abilities, stimulating the immune system, inhibiting the development of atherosclerosis, strengthening a weakened heart. Sam...

In this study the adsorption of selenium molecule (Se2) on the outer surface of zigzag (5,0), (8,0) and (10,0) carbon nanotubes has been investigated. We examined number adsorbed orientations as well as different adsorption sites on nanotubes. The adsorption energies, equilibrium distances, energy differences between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest uno...

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of varying dietary selenium (Se) levels and Se source on growing swine. In Exp. 1, seleniferous wheat and oats were used to formulate diets containing .47, 2.58, 5.60 or 8.40 micrograms/g organic Se. Dietary Se level had no effect on pig performance during the 6-wk experiment as measured by daily gain, daily feed intake or feed/gain. Blood ...

Selenium (Se) is an essential element with a small difference between physiological and toxic doses. To provide more effective and safe Se dosing regimens, as compared to dosing with ionic selenium, nanoparticle formulations have been developed. However, due to the nano-formulation, unexpected toxic effects may occur. We used metabolite pattern determination in urine to investigate biological a...

background: gastric cancer (gc) is the most common gastrointestinal cancer in iran. helicobacter pylori (h. pylori) accounts as one of the main risk factors for gastric non-cardia cancer (gncc). it is suggested that high serum selenium level may have a protective role in gncc. in this cross-sectional study, we determined the serum se level and the status of h. pylori infection in two population...

One feeding trial and two balance studies were conducted to study the effects of adding arsanilic acid or vitamin E (E) upon utilization of natural or supplemental selenium (Se) (from sodium selenite) in the diet. Eighty weanling pigs were assigned at random to eight dietary treatments in a 23 factorial design. The basal corn-soybean meal diet (containing .036 ppm Se and 6 IU E/kg) was fed alon...

Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected and bought from different locations (Slovenian coastline, Italy and NE Pacific) were analysed by techniques of hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) and liquid chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) in order to assess selenium (Se), its distribution and Se species in raw and cooked s...

Selenium (Se) concentrations were determined in human serum, rice and wheat flour sampled in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and compared with those sampled in Tokyo. Japan. Serum levels of Se were significantly lower in Japanese Brazilians than Japanese living in Tokyo. The samples of rice consumed by Japanese Brazilians in São Paulo contained 22.7 ng Se/g on average, which was about half the s...
