Self-regulation depends on a limited resource that can be depleted temporarily, but little is known about how this resource relates to individual differences in cognitive ability. We investigated whether self-regulatory depletion would vary with individual differences in fluid intelligence (gF), a stable index of cognitive ability with ties to executive function. Participants performed an emoti...

Four experiments examined when and why a depletion mechanism causes earlier choices in a sequence to influence subsequent choices between a vice (e.g. lowbrow movie) and a virtue (e.g. highbrow movie). We show that making tradeoffs is at the root of the depletion effects arising from choice. Furthermore, the larger the tradeoffs in a preceding choice, the more pronounced effect that choice has ...

Rodents affect the post-dispersal fate of seeds by acting either as on-site seed predators or as secondary dispersers when they scatter-hoard seeds. The tropical forests of north-east India harbour a high diversity of little-studied terrestrial murid and hystricid rodents. We examined the role played by these rodents in determining the seed fates of tropical evergreen tree species in a forest s...

Gorse (Ulex europaeus L.) is a major agricultural and environmental weed in many parts of the world and has a persistent seedbank. Several techniques were investigated to either kill the seed or encourage it to germinate. Scarification of the seed coat resulted in almost complete germination of seeds. Smoked water had little effect on intact seed and high concentrations killed scarified seed. G...

In order to investigate the effects of priming with a KH2Po4 solution on emergence and heterotrophic growth of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seedling, a series of experiments were conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, in 2013 and 2014. A field experiment was conducted as factorial layout based on a randomized complete block design with four replication...

Self-control is defined as individuals' capacity to alter, modify, change, or override impulses, desires, and habitual responses (Baumeister, 2002; Muraven et al., 2005). Capacity for self-control is important and adaptive. Without it, we would be " slaves " to habits and impulses and unable to engage in sustained, goal-directed behavior. Loss of self-control has been shown to be related to num...

The effect on induction period and tocopherol content after γ-irradiation on samples of olive oil and seed oils (sunflower and soybean) was determined. In seed oil samples 0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm of δ-tocopherol were added before irradiation with 1, 2 and 3kGy. The results of induction period showed that, after irradiation, all samples presented a significant decreased in resistance to oxidatio...

A computer simulation will be presented, which allows studying populations of 10,000 resource-using people. Simulation experiments can be conducted with populations whose initial parameters lead to resource depletion over the long or short term. Systematic experiments using this approach make it possible to determine which measures may lead to sustainable resource use.

Plant biologists have an enduring interest in assessing components of plant fitness and determining limits to seed set. Consequently, the relative contributions of resource and pollinator availability have been documented for a large number of plant species. We experimentally examined the roles of resource and pollen availability on seed set by the northern pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea. We...
