Bacterial communication plays an important role in many population-based phenotypes and interspecies interactions, including those in host environments. These interspecies interactions may prove critical to some infectious diseases, and it follows that communication between pathogenic bacteria and commensal bacteria is a subject of growing interest. Recent studies have shown that Escherichia co...

Cytophilic macroglobulin was eluted (by heating at 56 C for 60 min) from lymphoid cells of mice immunized with subfractions of virulent Salmonella typhimurium SR-11 or vaccinated with an attenuated strain of S. typhimurium (RIA). No such macroglobulin was present on comparable cell populations from normal or adjuvant-injected mice. Cytophilic macroglobulin was also present in the sera of immuni...

Rough strains of Salmonella typhimurium were sensitive to coliphage BF23. Spontaneous mutants resistant to BF23 (bfe) were isolated, and the trait was mapped using phage P1. The bfe gene in S. typhimurium was located between argF (66% co-transducible) and rif (61% co-transducible). The BF23-sensitive S. typhimurium strains were not sensitive to the E colicins. Cells of these rough strains absor...

Osteosarcoma occurs mostly in children and young adults, who are treated with multiple agents in combination with limb-salvage surgery. However, the overall 5-year survival rate for patients with recurrent or metastatic osteosarcoma is 20-30% which has not improved significantly over 30 years. Refractory patients would benefit from precise individualized therapy. We report here that a patient-d...

In 1999 and 2000, 3 state health departments reported 4 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness due to Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium in employees, clients, and client animals from 3 companion animal veterinary clinics and 1 animal shelter. More than 45 persons and companion animals became ill. Four independent investigations resulted in the testing of 19 human samples and >200 animal s...

The virulence plasmids of Salmonella typhimurium and other invasive Salmonella serovars have long been associated with the ability of these bacteria to cause systemic infection beyond the intestines in orally inoculated animals. Genetic analysis of virulence genes on the high-molecular-weight plasmids has revealed that no more than five genes spanning a 6.2-kb region are sufficient to replace t...

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a pathogenic bacterium that has been a major concern for food and public safety. Phages infecting S. Typhimurium may prove to be useful therapeutics against this harmful bacterium. Here, we announce the complete genome of S. Typhimurium T4-like myophage Maynard and describe its features.

We report here a new virulent Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S Typhimurium) bacteriophage, GG32, which was isolated from the Guem River in the Republic of Korea. The strain can infect both S Typhimurium and Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 and may be a good candidate for a bio-control agent.

Genetic analysis of host-pathogen interactions has been hampered by the lack of genetically tractable models of such interactions. We showed previously that the human opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa kills Caenorhabditis elegans, that P. aeruginosa and C. elegans genes can be identified that affect this killing, and that most of these P. aeruginosa genes are also important for mamm...

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) is a common cause of gastroenteritis in humans. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of 10 isolates of an S. Typhimurium phage type 135 variant that is linked to egg-associated outbreaks in Tasmania, Australia.
