While fierce competition impels many of the commercial markets into a low-profit environment, virtual enterprise (VE) appears as a business strategy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to alley together. However, to support the operations of a VE, a resource planning system (RPS) is required. In this study, a systematic and hierarchical approach which consists of top-down modeling and...

Changes to the nucleolus, the site of ribosome production, have long been linked to cancer, and mutations in several ribosomal proteins (RPs) have been associated with an increased risk for cancer in human diseases. Relevantly, a number of RPs have been shown to bind to MDM2 and inhibit MDM2 E3 ligase activity, leading to p53 stabilization and cell cycle arrest, thus revealing a RP-Mdm2-p53 sig...

We characterize a DNA segment of the Euglena gracills chloroplast DNA fragment Eco-N by nucleotlde sequencing and SI nuclease analysis. We show that this region, which is upstream of the previously sequenced tuf A gene, contains the genes for the ribosomal proteins S12 and S7. The gene arrangment is 5'-rps 12-80 bp spacer-rps 7-174 bp 3pacer-tuf A, somewhat similar to the str operon of E. coll....

BACKGROUND Treatment of severe or chronic skin wounds is an important challenge facing medicine and a significant health care burden. Proper wound healing is often affected by bacterial infection; where biofilm formation is one of the main risks and particularly problematic because it confers protection to microorganisms against antibiotics. One avenue to prevent bacterial colonization of wound...

We evaluated the effectiveness of Streptococcus iniae vaccines prepared from formalin-killed Ž . cells and concentrated extracellular products greater than 2 kDa of a single isolate of S. iniae Ž . ARS-10 and a combination of ARS-10qARS-60 S. iniae isolates in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, for the prevention of streptococcal disease. Two routes of administration, intraperitoneal Ž . We propose a method of suppressing the relative intensity noise caused by polarization-dependent gain that is inherent to Raman polarizers (RPs). This method involves bit-synchronously scrambling the state of polarization of a pulse (bit) before the pulse enters the RP. The proposed solution works for RPs operating in a depleted regime and is compatible with multichannel configurations.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiated on a prenatal basis in HIV-infected pregnant women is a highly effective method for preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission. We developed a decision analytic model to project the clinical and economic outcomes of alternative HIV screening strategies (voluntary prenatal screening [VPS], routine prenatal screening [RPS], and mandatory newborn screening [...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine whether response to prasugrel is associated with the proportion of circulating reticulated platelets (RPs) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). BACKGROUND Despite better pharmacodynamic properties and clinical efficacy of prasugrel compared with clopidogrel, antiplatelet responses to prasugrel are not uniform. T...

This work estimates the impact on school enrollment of a Nicaraguan conditional cash transfer program, Red de Protección Social (RPS). RPS is one of a growing number of these programs (e.g. Progresa, Bolsa Escola, and PRAF) that pays households regular cash transfers on the condition that their children attend school and all household members visit health clinics and seminars. A household model...

The Red de Protección Social (RPS) in Nicaragua is one of a growing number of conditional cash transfer programs that pay households cash stipends in exchange for school attendance and regular visits to health clinics. A key feature of these programs is that the cash is given to the woman head of household. The rationale stems from previous research in the developing world that transfers to wom...
