BACKGROUND Hip and knee arthroplasties are common and successful procedures, however, success and durability are not guaranteed. The revision burden, defined as the ratio of implant revisions to the total number of arthroplasties in a specific period, is a measure of the steady state of arthroplasty success in a given registry. This study examines the hypothesis that revision burden would be si...

This study is a retrospective evaluation of the intermediate-term results of 26 consecutive revision total hip arthroplasties performed with a modular titanium, uncemented femoral component. The average patient age at the time of revision total hip arthroplasty was 72 years, and there were an equal number of males and females. The mean follow-up was 5.7 years (ranging from 4 to 11 years). No re...

We report a case of interposition of a broken trochanteric wire in the hip joint. This caused early wear of the prosthesis and dislocation of the Charnley total hip arthroplasty. The patient was treated with a revision total hip arthroplasty. This rare complication should be taken into consideration when performing a trochanteric osteotomy fixation with wiring in Charnley total hip arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVE To determine whether the second-generation constrained condylar prosthesis provided satisfactory results in revision total knee arthroplasty. METHODS A series of 41 cases of revision total knee arthroplasty using the second-generation constrained condylar knee prosthesis was reviewed. The series comprised 7 men and 34 women with a mean age of 73.2 years. The original diagnosis was p...

BACKGROUND The present study was designed to clarify which underlying indications can be currently considered the main reasons for failure after total knee arthroplasty as a function of time. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study that included all first revisions of total knee replacements during 2005 to 2010 at two high-volume arthroplasty centers. A revision was defined as the replacem...

Many arthroplasty outcome studies use administrative data to evaluate complications and mortality. Most databases use International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision or Current Procedural Terminology codes, which lack laterality information. This study determined the frequency with which a second operation occurs on the same side after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthro...

The utilization of autologous and allogeneic transfusions in total joint arthroplasties was to characterize patients who may benefit from giving preoperative blood donations. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 525 patients to document preoperative hematocrit, estimated blood loss, length of stay, transfusions, and medical comorbidities. Results of our review showed that total hip arth...

Glass ionomer cement (Ionocem) was developed for use in bone surgery and is reported to be notably biocompatible. Between 1991 and 1994 we performed revision operations for aseptic loosening of arthroplasties of the hip on 45 patients using this material in its granulate form (Ionogran) mixed with homologous bone as a bone substitute. Of these 45 patients, 42 were followed up for a mean of 42 m...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Specialist hospitals have reported an incidence of early deep infections of < 1% following primary knee replacement. The purpose of this study was to estimate the infection rate in a nationwide series using register-based data. METHODS The Finnish Arthroplasty Register (FAR) was searched for primary unicompartmental, total, and revision knee arthroplasties performed in ...
