OBJECTIVE To determine the drug resistance profile of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Mozambique. METHODS We analyzed secondary data from the National Tuberculosis Referral Laboratory, in the city of Maputo, Mozambique, and from the Beira Regional Tuberculosis Referral Laboratory, in the city of Beira, Mozambique. The data were based on culture-positive samples submitted to first-line drug susc...

Multi-drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB) are present world wide, and in many areas constitute a serious threat to the efficacy of TB control programs. The most effective strategies to limit further spread of MDR-TB are rapid detection of drug resistance followed by prompt and effective therapy. Routine laboratory diagnosis of drug resistance in TB requires a viable, p...

The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis underscores the need for low-cost, rapid methods to determine the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to antibiotics. A new, rapid, easily read, and inexpensive colorimetric method with a tetrazolium indicator performs this determination as quickly and accurately as the more expensive Alamar Blue technique.

Drug resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) has been reported since the early days of introduction of antitubercular chemotherapy, but recently multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), has been an area of growing concern, and is posing threat to global efforts of tuberculosis control. Prevalence of MDR-TB, in a community mirrors the functional state and efficacy of tuberculosis control programme and...

The continued spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis poses a major threat to global tuberculosis control. Treatment is complex and requires longer use of more-expensive, less effective, and toxic anti-tuberculosis drugs, which results in high morbidity and mortality. The poor treatment outcomes and the slow progress in the development and ev...

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), defined as being resistant to at least rifampicin and isoniazid, has an increasing burden and threatens TB control. Diagnosis is limited and usually delayed while treatment is long lasting, toxic and poorly effective. MDR-TB management in scarce-resource settings is demanding however it is feasible and extremely necessary. In these settings, cure rates...

Tuberculosis is a worldwide health problem posing increasing threat with the spread of HIV infection and drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Consequently, control of this disease has become a significant challenge despite the availability of chemotherapy and BCG vaccine. Drug resistance for all first-line anti-tuberculosis agents and some second-line agents has been observed. Mor...
