Background: It has been shown that the synthesis and secretion of cytokines is influenced by the imbalance in oxidant/antioxidant status. In this study, the relation between the circulating levels of oxidative stress biomarkers and proinflammatory cytokines was searched in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients in order to evaluate the possible role of oxidative stress in ongoing proinfla...

BACKGROUND We aimed to examine whether proinflammatory cytokines participated in prostate cancer (PCa) development and progression promoted by high-fat diet (HFD). METHODS TRAMP (transgenic adenocarcinoma mouse prostate) mice were randomly divided into two groups: normal diet group and HFD group. Mortality rate and tumor formation rate were examined. TRAMP mice were sacrificed and sampled on ...

IL-33, a cytokine of the IL-1 family, is closely associated with type II T cell responses. Here, we report an unexpected proinflammatory role of IL-33 in inflammatory arthritis. IL-33 was expressed in synovial fibroblasts from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Expression was markedly elevated in vitro by inflammatory cytokines. Mice lacking ST2, the IL-33 receptor alpha-chain, developed ...

Recently, gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have shown promising applications in targeted drug delivery and contrast imaging. Although in vitro cytotoxicity of GNPs has been thoroughly studied, there are limited data on in vivo toxicity of GNPs. In this study, we evaluated the effects of intraperitoneally injected 10 nm and 50 nm GNPs (5 μg/animal) on the expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β,...

BACKGROUND Cordyceps militaris has been used in traditional medicine to treat numerous diseases and has been reported to possess both antitumor and immunomodulatory activities in vitro and in vivo. However, the pharmacological and biochemical mechanisms of Cordyceps militaris extract (CME) on macrophages have not been clearly elucidated. In the present study, we examined how CME induces the pro...

Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in several biological processes. In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), proinflammatory cytokines activate an inducible isoform of NOS (iNOS) in β cells, thus increasing NO levels and inducing apoptosis. The aim of the current study is to determine the role of NO (1) in the antiproliferative effect of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1 β , IFN- γ , and TNF- α on cultured ...

A hallmark of hyperoxic acute lung injury is the influx of inflammatory cells to lung tissue and the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1beta; however, the mechanisms connecting hyperoxia and the inflammatory response to lung damage is not clear. The inflammasome protein complex activates caspase-1 to promote the processing and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. We hypothe...

Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol 287: H791–H797, 2004; doi:10.1152/ajpheart.00099.2004.— Within minutes of acute myocardial infarction (MI), proinflammatory cytokines increase in the brain, heart, and plasma. We hypothesized that cardi...

Patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) have increased serum proinflammatory cytokines and an increased occurrence of respiratory complications. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of renal and extrarenal cytokine production on AKI-mediated lung injury in mice. C57Bl/6 mice underwent sham surgery, splenectomy, ischemic AKI, or ischemic AKI with splenectomy and kidney, spleen,...

Interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine, was measured in 131 children with meningococcal disease. IL-10 concentrations were significantly higher in children who died and correlated positively with proinflammatory cytokines. Children who die from meningococcal disease have high IL-10 concentrations, which do not suppress proinflammatory cytokines.
