Sir,?This treatment has not found by any means strong support, although founded on good chemical reason, i.e., that potassium permanganate decomposes morphia. If is naturally only useful to render harmless the morphia tvhich is in the alimentary canal and so unabsorbed. No one who understands what poisoning is, would expect this drug to be of service when a case is seen late, and a lethal dose ...

The case is reported of a patient with systemic AA amyloidosis associated with non-specific mesenteric lymphadenitis and chronic sideropenia. Renal, small bowel, and rectal biopsies showed amyloid deposits containing AA protein, as defined by potassium permanganate sensitivity and by reactivity with AA antiserum. Reversal of the nephrotic syndrome occurred during steroid-azathioprine therapy.

The specific reaction of potassium permanganate with thymine in single-stranded DNA was employed to analyze thymine [2+2] dimer repair in DNA and in DNA/peptide nucleic acid hybrid duplexes. This simple and highly sensitive chemical assay is convenient for monitoring repair of thymine dimers in oligonucleotides.

Antioxidant activity of water extracts from Ziziphus jujuba fruits and Hydrangea paniculata leaves, maintained in a refrigerator, was determined by the potassium permanganate method. The results presented in this paper indicate that the fruit extracts from Ziziphus jujuba had higher antioxidant activity than Hydrangea paniculata leaf extracts and that both fermentation processes had a strong ef...

An epithelioid line of rabbit kidney cells (RK 13), in which the distribution of blood group antigen A had previously been investigated by mixed agglutination, was chosen for studies of the structure of the cell surface. Cells were grown in monolayer culture, and thin sections were examined by electron microscopy after fixation in glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide and staining of the sections...

• The discovery of the first crown ether is described. Forty-seven other aromatic and saturated polyethers were synthesized and their properties determined. Many form stable crystalline complexes with alkali and alkaline earth salts. Some saturated crown ethers solubilize potassium hydroxide and permanganate in aromatic hydrocarbons, EThe SC!5 indicates that this paper has been cited in over 1,...

Heightened interest in the cytology of certain free-living flatworms has been evident in the literature throughout the past year (5, 6, 10-12). The variety of problems dealt with by various investigators reflects the abundance of curious cellular specialization found in this group of animals. Moreover, the suitability of the Turbellarians for the study of regenerative processes is well recogniz...

Many enzymes that repair or modify bases in double-stranded DNA gain access to their substrates by base flipping. Although crystal structures provide stunning snap shots, biochemical approaches addressing the dynamics have proven difficult, particularly in complicated multi-step reactions. Here, we use protein-DNA crosslinking and potassium permanganate reactivity to explore the base-flipping s...
