We built and trained a model of intonation in continuous Mandarin speech based on the Stem-ML model of interacting accents. With this model, we found that we can accurately reproduce the intonation of the speaker using only one accent template for each lexical tone category. The resulting parameters are interpretable, and we find that the fitted model is consistent with linguistic expectations....

We formulate a phenomenological model for the segregation of binary mixtures of rough and smooth granular materials in a rotating drum. Our model successfully replicates a range of experimental behaviours, e.g., rapid radial segregation; slow axial segregation; and nonuniform radial structure of axial bands. We present some analytical results and detailed numerical results for our model.

Using a specific model for the expansion rate of the Universe as a function of scale factor, it is demonstrated that the equation of state of the dark energy cannot be determined uniquely from observations at redshifts z ∼ a few unless the fraction of the mass density of the Universe in nonrelativistic particles, ΩM , somehow can be found independently. A phenomenological model is employed to d...

A comparative analysis of different models of a Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper was done. Three models were tested: a non-linear ARX, a semi-phenomenological and a phenomenological. Although the non-linear ARX model shown the best result, this is a black-box model with limited use. However, the Semi-Phenomenological model represented an excellent option considering the physical meaning of its p...

Social theory today is in crisis. During the 1960s, a variety of new theoretical paradigms emerged which put in question the prevailing quantitative, empiricist, and positivist conceptions of social theory and social research. Growing dissatisfaction with the dominant methodologies and theories produced by the mainstream promoted a search for alternative methodologies and conceptions of social ...

We present a microscopical model of the domain wall motion through a disordered medium. Unlike a previous phenomenological model, which explains most of the experimental data, the disorder is supposed to be uncorrelated. The dynamical equation of the motion has a upper critical dimension of 3, so that a mean field description is suitable to describe soft magnetic materials. It is shown that the...

We use Stem-ML to build an automatic learning system for Mandarin prosody that allows us to make quantitative measurements of prosodic strengths. Stem-ML is a phenomenological model of the muscle dynamics and planning process that controls the tension of the vocal folds. Because Stem-ML describes the interactions between nearby tones or accents, we were able to use a highly constrained model wi...

In inclusive decays of the Ψ (3097), electromagnetic and gluonic annihilation amplitudes add incoherently, namely they are 90 out of phase. We argue that this incoherence must persist in each exclusive decay channel. For inclusive Ψ (3686) decays, we suggest the absence of a significant direct annihilation amplitude into three gluons and propose a new amplitude via QCD anomalies and the hc (352...

Inferior olive (IO) neurons project to the cerebellum and contribute to motor control. They can show intriguing spatio-temporal dynamics with rhythmic and synchronized spiking. IO neurons are connected to their neighbors via gap junctions to form an electrically coupled network, and so it is considered that this coupling contributes to the characteristic dynamics of this nucleus. Here, we demon...

This work proposes an explanation of the Pioneer anomaly, the unmodelled and as yet unexplained blueshift detected in the microwave signal of the Pioneer 10 and other spaceships by Anderson et al in 1998. What they observed is similar to the effect that would have either (i) an anomalous acceleration aP of the ship towards the Sun or (ii) an acceleration of the clocks at = aP/c. The second alte...
