The aim of this study was to quantify radiographically the periapical bone resorption in dogs' teeth contaminated with bacterial endotoxin (LPS), associated or not with calcium hydroxide. After pulp tissue removal, 60 premolars were randomly assigned to 4 groups and were either filled with LPS (group 1), filled with LPS plus calcium hydroxide (group 2) or filled with saline (group 3) for a peri...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new periapical index based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for identification of apical periodontitis (AP). The periapical index proposed in this study (CBCTPAI) was developed on the basis of criteria established from measurements corresponding to periapical radiolucency interpreted on CBCT scans. Radiolucent images suggestive of periapical le...

INTRODUCTION The long-term outcome of apical surgery performed on root-filled teeth presenting with post-treatment apical periodontitis has been the subject of debate; therefore, current evidence is required to support the prognosis of this important procedure. The objectives of this study were (1) to assess the long-term outcome of apical surgery and (2) to identify significant outcome predict...

Mediastinal abscess is a rare presentation of infections involving the mediastinum. In rare cases, the origin of the infection cannot be identified. We report a case of a 32-year old male who was presented with a mediastinal abscess with an otherwise clear history. The origin of the infection could not be identified despite extensive investigations. The patient was operated through a cervical i...

We retrospectively reviewed medical records to identify the factors that affect the results of culture in patients with pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis. In multivariate analysis, the presence of paravertebral abscess was associated with positive results of microbiologic culture. Prior antibiotic exposure, especially of longer duration, was strongly associated with negative results.

Lingual abscess is an unusual condition but it may become a life-threatening entity. It presents as a very painful swelling of the tongue that, in its early stages, can be managed by antibiotic treatment. When the airway is obstructed, drainage is required by an open incision or aspiration with a large bore needle. We report a case who consulted on two occasions for a lingual abscess, which ope...

BACKGROUND Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease affecting periradicular tissues. It is a widespread condition but its etiopathogenetic mechanisms have not been completely elucidated and the current treatment options are not always successful. PURPOSE To compare oxidative stress (OxS) levels in the saliva and the endodontium (root canal [RC] contents) in patients with different...

Frequent occurrence of dental trauma in the early childhood often leads to persistence of immature nonvital tooth supplemented by periapical periodontitis as well as inflammatory external root resorption. Such teeth pose several difficulties in front of the clinician primarily due to absence of definite apical stop. The present case report highlights the nonsurgical endodontic management of a s...

Thorough knowledge of the morphology and internal anatomy of the root canal system is essential, because it determines the successful outcome of endodontic treatment. The main goal of endodontic treatment is to prevent apical periodontitis and/or to promote the healing of periapical lesion. Presence of two canals or roots on the palatal side of the first maxillary molar has rarely been reported...
