Mitral balloon valvuloplasty which has been used for the treatment of rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) for several decades can cause serious complications. Herein, we presented right atrial clot formation early after percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty which was treated successfully with unfractioned heparin infusion.

AIMS We assessed early and long-term pulmonary function changes after percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (PBMV). METHODS AND RESULTS Mitral area, lung function, and exercise capacity were evaluated before, immediately after, and 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after successful PBMV in 24 patients. PBMV resulted in a significant and sustained increase in mitral area, from 1.0 +/- 0.1 to 1...

A three year old girl with severe congenital mitral stenosis was successfully treated by percutaneous balloon dilatation of the mitral valve. Cardiac catheterisation and cross sectional and Doppler echocardiography indicated that the orifice of the mitral valve had doubled in area. A small atrial septal defect was found at follow up cardiac catheterisation and angiography. Balloon dilatation of...

This study reports the clinical follow-up (13 +/- 1 months) of 100 consecutive patients who underwent percutaneous mitral balloon valvotomy (PMV). Echocardiographic (n = 32) and cardiac catheterization (n = 37) data from this group are also included. Patients were divided into two groups by an echocardiographic score. PMV resulted in a good hemodynamic result (post-PMV mitral valve area, greate...

BACKGROUND Eight patients with severe congenital mitral stenosis underwent double transseptal, double-balloon valvuloplasty; two had isolated congenital mitral stenosis, six had additional cardiac defects, and one had previous surgical valvotomy. Ages ranged from 0.6 to 36 years (median, 9 years). METHODS AND RESULTS All procedures were tolerated well. After valvuloplasty, the left atrial a w...

BACKGROUND Percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV) is the gold standard treatment for rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) in that it causes significant changes in mitral valve area (MVA) and improves leaflet mobility. Development of or increase in mitral regurgitation (MR) is common after BMV. This study evaluated MR severity and its changes after BMV in Iranian patients. METHODS We prospectiv...
