In this thesis I present experiments investigating controlled coupling between mechanical oscillators and ultracold atoms. I report on three different coupling mechanisms. A new oscillator-like system called by the Legendre oscillator is introduced in this note. The two families of coherent states (coherent states as eigenvectors of the annihilation operator and the Klauder — Gazeau temporally stable coherent states) are defined and investigated for this oscillator.

We present a rf gas discharge apparatus which provides an atomic frequency reference for laser manipulation of metastable helium. We discuss the biasing and operation of a Colpitts oscillator in which the discharge coil is part of the oscillator circuit. Radiofrequency radiation is reduced by placing the entire oscillator in a metal enclosure.
