Organochlorine chemicals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been suspected as possible risk factors for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We investigated PCBs and organochlorine pesticides and risk of NHL in a population-based case-control study in British Columbia, Canada. Congeners of PCBs (including dioxinlike congeners) and pesticides or pesticide metabolites were measured in plasma of 422...

The authors analyzed the relation between lactation history, organochlorine serum levels-in particular, 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane (DDT) and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE)-and the risk of breast cancer within a subsampe from a larger breast cancer case-control study conducted among women living in Mexico City, Mexico, between 1990 and 1995. From the origin...

Human milk is the most favorable nutrition for infants. Unfortunately, human breast milk also contains traces of persistent organochlorines (OC). This leads to exposure throughout the breastfeeding period. The levels of OC in milk depend on many factors such as mothers age, number of deliveries and lactation periods, place of residence, changes in the mother's weight during lactation or nutrition.

the aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of coupling an electrochemical process with a biological treatment in order to degrade phosmet, an organophosphorous pesticide. the absence of biodegradability of phosmet by pseudomonas fluorescens and activated sludge was verified in our operational conditions. so, a conventional biological treatment is not appropriate for phosmet polluted...

Whether environmental contaminants increase breast cancer risk among women on Long Island, NY, is unknown. The study objective is to determine whether breast cancer risk is increased in relation to organochlorines, compounds with known estrogenic characteristics that were extensively used on Long Island and other areas of the United States. Recent reports do not support a strong association, al...

Organophosphorus compounds are irreversible inhibitors of cholinesterase enzyme. Exposure causes a progression of toxic signs, including hypersecretion, tremor, convulsion, respiratory distress, epileptiform seizure, brain injuries and death. To protect brain injuries, administration of diazepam as a neuroprotectant is now considered essential for severely exposed nerve agent casualties. Howeve...
