The efficient generation of surface plasmons from free space optical waves is still an open problem in the field. Here we present a methodology and optimized design for a grating coupler. The photoexcitation of surface plasmons at an Ag-SiO2 interface is numerically demonstrated to yield greater than 50% coupling from a Gaussian beam into surface plasmon voltages and currents.

We discuss a novel kind of nonlinear coupler with one channel filled with a negative index metamaterial. The opposite directionality of the phase velocity and the energy flow in the negative index metamaterial channel facilitates an effective feedback mechanism that leads to optical bistability and gap soliton formation.
We demonstrate the fabrication of a low loss broadband vertical coupler for use in the 3D integration of Si3N4 based planar waveguides. Planar Bragg grating based photonic Hilbert transformers (PHTs) with THz bandwidths are proposed and practically demonstrated. An X-coupler, PHT, and a flat-top reflector are incorporated, demonstrating 2THz all-optical single-sideband filters. Devices are fabricated via a direct UV grating writing technique on a silica-on-silicon platform.
We experimentally demonstrate trapping a microdroplet by using an optical tweezer and then activating it as a microresonator by bringing it close to a tapered-fiber coupler. Our tweezers facilitated the tuning of the coupling from the under-coupled to the critically-coupled regime while the quality-factor [Q] is 12 million and the resonator's size is at the 80 μm scale.
We improve theoretically and experimentally the problem of the coupling between a high Q-factor resonator and its external coupler. We have observed oscillations of ringing induced by the sweeping of the excitation frequency of an active micro sphere. Thanks to this approach, quality factor of an optical resonator was measured and we obtained Q = 5.8×10.
