Expressive models of the work processes performed in the chemical and process industries provide a basis for diverse applications like work process documentation, analysis, and enactment. In this contribution, we present a generic modeling language for different types of work processes to allow for their integrated representation in the life cycle of a chemical plant. Further, the generic langu...

This paper presents a simulation environment for manufacturing systems integrating control processes and operational processes. From the operational processes specification according to the JIS Z 8206 norm and from the control processes as Workflows standards, distributed G-DEVS models are generated. At first, the transformation of a process in G-DEVS models is described. Then, the implementati...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for understanding value-added and abuse prevention activities in business processes. Design/methodology/approach – The paper considers business processes as a regulation mechanism that an organization uses to survive and flourish in its environment. It proposes a theoretical framework based on the concept of homeostasis, the maintena...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual benefits of radio frequency identification (RFID) on supply chain performance through the empirical evidence. Design/methodology/approach – The research reviews and classifies the existing quantitative empirical evidence of RFID on supply chain performance. The evidence is classified by process (operational or managerial) and for ...

Soft interactions are not easily disentangled from hard ones. In an operational definition of soft and hard processes one finds that at presently analyzed scales there is an interplay of soft and hard processes. As the scale increases, so does the amount of hard processes. So far, nothing is as soft nor as hard as we would like.

This article presents an experimental investigation of OPW treatment for oil removal by integration of two processes: coalescer bed and microfiltration membranes (MF). The main goal is to reach an effluent quality good enough for injection, discharge or reuse in surface activities. The objective of processes combination is to overcome operational problems and limitations that both processes pre...

Compensation is an error recovery mechanism for long-running transactions. Compensating CSP is a variant of the CSP process algebra with constructs for orchestration of compensations. We present a simple operational semantics for Compensating CSP and outline an encoding of this semantics in Prolog. This provides a basis for implementation and model checking of the language.

The three classical process algebras CCS, CSP and ACP present several differences in their respective technical machinery. This is due, not only to the difference in their operators, but also to the terminology and “way of thinking” of the community which has been (and still is) working with them. In this paper we will first discuss such differences and try to clarify the different usage of ter...
