BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Recent reports indicate that the incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial-lung disease (NTM-LD) is increasing. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and clinical features of NTM-LD patients in Nagasaki prefecture, Japan to identify the negative prognostic factors for NTM-LD in Japan. METHODS The medical records of patients newly diagnosed with NTM-LD in e...

BACKGROUND Data on the prevalence of and factors associated with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in patients with non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis are limited. Our aim was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with isolation of NTM in this population. METHODS We performed a multicenter observational study of historical cohorts comprising consecutive patients with non-CF ...

To characterize the distribution of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species isolated from pulmonary samples from persons in Asia and their association with pulmonary infections, we reviewed the literature. Mycobacterium avium complex bacteria were most frequently isolated (13%-81%) and were the most common cause of pulmonary NTM disease (43%-81%). Also pathogenic were rapidly growing mycobact...

BACKGROUND Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are found ubiquitously in the environment. Since exposure to NTM is universal, infection likely represents underlying host susceptibility factors. Anti-IFN-ɣ autoantibodies have been described previously in patients with NTM. Up to 88 % of patients with disseminated NTM or other opportunistic infections have high-titer anti-IFN-ɣ autoantibodies, comp...

To determine whether tuberculosis (TB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection patients could be distinguished from one another with limited information, we compared pulmonary TB and NTM patients during 2005-2006. Our finding that age, birthplace, and presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease could differentiate TB and NTM disease could assist tuberculosis control efforts.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a rare cause of ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections. We describe the isolation and identification of a novel, rapidly growing, nonpigmented NTM from an abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst. The patient presented with fevers, nausea, and abdominal pain and clinically improved after shunt removal. NTM identification was performed by amplicon and whole-g...

Treatment for patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease includes long, multi-drug, and toxic medication regimens. Surgical resection is an alternative treatment localized or refractory NTM infection. Robot-assisted operations have not been performed routinely in this population.

Introduction Many studies have shown epidemiological links between strains isolated in tap water, and those isolated from patients. Molecular methods linked to PCR are more reliable and faster for identification of             non- tuberculous mycobacteria(NTM). In this study molecular methods were used for identification and typing of NTM. Materials and Methods Five hundred ml of 85 water ...

BACKGROUND It is difficult to quickly distinguish non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection from tuberculosis (TB) infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients because of many similarities between these diseases. A simple and effective way to determine the differences using routine blood tests is necessary in developing countries. METHODS A retrospective cohort study ...

Background. Diseases caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have varied manifestations in different groups of patients. NTM infection has been an important cause of morbidity and mortality. We aimed to describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics, including outcomes of NTM infection in Thai population. Methods. A retrospective study was conducted among patients who were infect...
