A highly efficient asymmetric formal [4+2] annulation for the synthesis of dihydrocoumarins has been developed via an in situ activated NHC catalysis. Both electrophilic and nucleophilic species are generated in situ simultaneously whereby acyl imidazoles facilitated rapid formation of an NHC-enolate intermediate to afford the [4+2] dihydrocoumarin adducts.

The efficient asymmetric synthesis of highly substituted succinimides from α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and α-ketoamides via NHC-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition has been developed. The new scalable protocol significantly expands the utility of NHC catalysis for the synthesis of heterocycles and provides easy access to assemble a wide range of succinimides from simple starting materials.

A 9 ps (3)MLCT lifetime was achieved by a Fe(II) complex based on C(NHC)^N(py)^C(NHC) pincer ligands. This is the longest known so far for any kind of complexes of this abundant metal, and increased by almost two orders of magnitude compared to the reference Fe(II) bis-terpyridine complex.

Complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with copper(II) halogenides are unstable. Upon formation, these complexes decompose to give haloamidinium salts. Contrastingly, O-substituted copper(II) NHC complexes are fairly stable. A series of new five-, six- and seven-membered ring NHC complexes of Cu(OAc)(2) have been synthesised and characterised in the solid state.

We found that chemoselectivity of the crossed acyloin product is controlled by the adjustment of the aromatic aldehyde/aliphatic aldehyde ratio. Moreover, we observed the persistent catalytic activity of the homogeneous NHC catalyst in a solution due to NHC catalyst robustness.

The synthesis and characterization of a new class of cationic (NHC)gold(I) (NHC = N-Heterocyclic carbene) complex containing the phosphate counterions TRISPHAT and TRISPHAT-N have been achieved. The selection of the appropriate hexacoordinated phosphate architecture permits the isolation of complexes bearing an inner or outer sphere anionic counterion.
