In this Paper we report on phase resolved I–band optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of Cir X–1 obtained with the Very Large Telescope. The spectra are dominated by Paschen absorption lines at nearly all orbital phases except near phase zero (coinciding with the X–ray dip) when the absorption lines are filled–in by broad Paschen emission lines. The radial velocity curve of the ab...

background: monte carlo simulations play a vital role in the calculation of the necessary shielding both for neutrons and photons. advanced and simple shielding materials against neutron and gamma rays were compared by simulation using the mcnb4b monte carlo code. the simulations were carried out for the three common neutron sources, namely the 252cf, the 241am/be and the dd neutron generator w...

Upon increasing needs and vast application of neutron detectors, especially in nuclear reactors and growing number of linear accelerators, design and manufacturing of neutron detectors is a serious demand. The aim of this project is building neutron detectors capable of compensating gamma and temperature response in a radiation media. A special thermocouple coated with Boron carbide at the junc...

Analytical approximations are constructed for binding energies, quantum-mechanical sizes and oscillator strengths of main radiative transitions of hydrogen atoms arbitrarily moving in magnetic fields ∼ 1012–1013 G. Examples of using the obtained approximations for determination of maximum transverse velocity of an atom and for the evaluation of absorption spectra in magnetic neutron-star atmosp...

The Gamow–Teller β decays of the neutron-deficient indium isotopes 104–107In have been investigated by using total absorption γ -ray spectrometry on mass-separated sources. The experimental Gamow–Teller strength, deduced as a function of the excitation energy in the daughter nuclei 104–107Cd, is compared to shell-model predictions.  2001 Elsevier Science B.V. We measured in situ the radiation-induced absorption of pure silica core fibers exposed to a fission nuclear reactor. We observed the growth of the 1.39m OH vibration band in polymer coated fiber. Three mechanisms are responsible for this effect: recoil protons, hydrogen diffusion, and a probable compaction effect. Based on this experiment, a fiber-optic neutron monitor prototype is proposed.

M []The faint neutron star soft X–ray transient SAX J1810.8–2609 in quiescence [P.G. Jonker et al.] P.G. Jonkeremail : [email protected], R. Wijnands, M. van der Klis document abstract We present the analysis of a 35 ksec long Chandra observation of the neutron star soft X–ray transient (SXT) SAX J1810.8–2609. We detect three sources in the field of view. The position of one of them is consi...

Recently, polymeric nanocomposites have been used in dosimetry and detection of gamma rays, but due to their low photon absorption cross section, they exhibit a small sensitivity to gamma rays. In order to overcome this problem, metal oxide particles with a high atomic number are added to the polymer matrix. For this purpose, in this work, tungsten oxide particles (WO3) were distributed in poly...

Background: To evaluate the effects of hyperthermia (HT) on the frequency of chromosomal aberrations induced by a low dose of neutron or γ-rays in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were exposed to HT (41.5°C for 30 and 60min, 43°C for 15 and 30min), 10 cGy neutron or γ-rays, HT + neutron/γ, and neutron/γ + HT. After standard cell culture, harvestin...
