BACKGROUND Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous inflammatory disease that is induced by infectious or noninfectious environmental antigens in a genetically susceptible host. Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis are two diseases with similar clinical and pathologic findings. The link between these two diseases has been extensively studied. OBJECTIVE Herein we describe a case of sarcoidosis assoc...
The saccharin test was carried out in a randomly selected sample of schoolchildren (142 boys and 153 girls, age range 11-14 years) to determine the variability and reproducibility of the test and to assess whether it could be used as a screening test for nasal mucociliary clearance. Nasal mucociliary clearance times were analysed according to clinical history (asthma, rhinitis, asthma with rhin...
BACKGROUND Commonly used techniques for achieving nasal tip projection and refinement are adequate for most primary rhinoplasty patients, but they may result in undesirable tip bifidity and visible lower lateral cartilage angularity, especially in patients with thin skin. OBJECTIVE We report the use of "like" local tissues, cephalic trim cartilage remnants of the lower lateral cartilages, as ...

Intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) is expected to improve treatment results with fewer side effects than other proton therapies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tumor sites for which IMPT was effective under the same beam calculation conditions by planning IMPT for typical cases treated with passive scattering proton therapy (PSPT). We selected 16 cases of nasal cavity, lun...
PURPOSE Allergic rhinitis is clinically defined as a disorder of the nose induced by IgE mediated inflammation after allergen exposure of the nasal mucosa. Many reports have stated that Panax ginseng and fermented red ginseng have anti-inflammatory effects, especially against Th2-type inflammation. This study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effects of fermented red ginseng in allergic...
Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare idiopathic inflammatory myopathy with characteristic skin lesions. Case series have shown an association between dermatomyositis and malignancy. Malignancy has been found in 15-25% of the adult patients with dermatomyositis. A 50-year-old new case of breast cancer, was admitted with muscle weakness and inability to walk. Physical examination revealed fever, perior...
We report the unusual case of a 72-year-old man who developed acute and extensive necrosis of the nasal skin and soft-tissue envelope while undergoing chemotherapy for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a lymphoproliferative disorder. The patient’s treatment involved infusions of rituximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody that is directed against B cell surface membrane protein CD20. The patient r...
We have found prefabrication of hairless radial forearm free flap to be a useful technique for nasal reconstruction. Prior skin grafting and a suitable period of maturation permits safe, reliable surgery. Its use should be considered in those patients whose forehead tissue is not suitable or in whom appropriate distant flaps are not available, as is often the case with hirsute males.
