Background and Objectives: Biofilms are a community of bacteria on surfaces coated with extracellular polymeric materials, and one strategy to remove biofilms is to use nanoparticles. The aim of this study was to synthesize green zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and determine its anti-biofilm effects on biofilm gene expression in multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. Materials and M...

In this work, in situ transmission electron microscopy heating has been used to investigate the effects of a carbon capping layer on sintering of silver nanoparticles. For the first time, we make direct and real-time measurements of surface diffusivity of silver in nanoparticles coated with carbon. We observe that the carbon surface coatings may significantly inhibit sintering in silver nanopar...

Uniform 3 nm-sized ceria nanoparticles can protect against ischemic stroke by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing apoptosis. PEGylated ceria nanoparticles showed protective effects against ROS-induced cell death in vitro. Optimal doses of ceria nanoparticles reduced infarct volumes and the rate of ischemic cell death in vivo.

The effects against tumors exerted by marine active compounds have been highlighted and investigated. Polymeric nanoparticles made from biodegradable and biocompatible molecules such as hyaluronan (HA) and chitosan (CHI) are able to aggregate the compounds to enhance their activities against tumor cells and reduce the toxicity on normal cells. Here, we extensively examined the antitumor activit...

The invasive nature and adverse side effects of surgery and chemotherapy have limited the efficacy of cancer treatment. Our laboratory has incorporated tissue penetrating near infrared (NIR) light and NIR-sensitive nanoparticles to develop a minimally invasive drug delivery system. NIR-activated release of an anticancer drug from NIR-sensitive nanoparticles could potentially reduce deleterious ...

Extended Abstract Introduction: Drought stress, as abiotic and multidimensional stress, has severe effects on plant growth. One of the new approaches in the management of drought stress is the use of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles infilterate the seeds and increase nutrient and water uptake and ultimately, improve germination. The present research was conducted to evaluate the effects of titaniu...
