Quinupristin/dalfopristin displays in-vitro bacteriostatic activity against all Legionella spp. (MICs = 0.06-2 mg/L), with Legionella pneumophila usually being at least two-fold more sensitive to quinupristin/dalfopristin than Legionella bozemanii, Legionella dumoffii, Legionella gormanii and Legionella micdadei (MIC = 0.06-2 vs 1-2 mg/L, respectively). Against Legionella spp., quinupristin/dal...

Staphylococcus hominis is a culturable component of the bacterial microbiome of Anopheles stephensi. Here, we present the annotated draft genome sequences of three S. hominis isolates from A. stephensi. These genomic resources will facilitate experiments to further our understanding of the role of bacteria in mosquito biology.

The in vitro susceptibilities of 103 Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates, 14 Mycoplasma hominis isolates, 12 Mycoplasma fermentans isolates, and 24 Ureaplasma species to ABT-773, an investigational ketolide, and seven other agents were determined. For M. pneumoniae, the ABT-773 MIC at which 90% of isolates are inhibited (MIC(90); <or=0.001 microg/ml) was comparable to those of azithromycin, clarithr...

Transposon Tn916 was transferred from Streptococcus faecalis to Mycoplasma hominis by a mating process resembling conjugation with a frequency of 10(-6) to 10(-7). Tn916 was inserted into the mycoplasmal chromosome in single and multiple copies.

Mycoplasma hominis infections are easily missed because conventional methods for bacterial detection may fail. Here, 8 cases of septic mediastinitis due to M. hominis are reported and reviewed in the context of previously reported cases of mediastinitis, sternum wound infection, pleuritis, or pericarditis caused by M. hominis. All 8 patients had a predisposing initial condition related to poor ...

Five arginine-utilizing, nonglycolytic Mycoplasma species were compared serologically by two dimensional immunoelectrophoresis. The survey included: Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma arthritidis, Mycoplasma gateae, Mycoplasma gallinarum, and three strains of Mycoplasma arginini. Although the M. arginini strains showed strong cross-reactions, each strain produced a different antigenic profile which...

Septic arthritis of the hip is rarely caused by Mycoplasma hominis. It rarely develops in a patient during the postpartum period. However, delayed treatment of septic arthritis of the hip may lead to serious sequelae; therefore, it is important for clinicians not to overlook patients with the disease. This case illustrates the clinical steps in diagnosis and treatment of M. hominis septic arthr...

Thirty-three strains representing 15 distinct Mycoplasma, Acholeplasma, and Spiroplasma species were examined for the presence of plasmid DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis. The electrophoretic patterns of the DNAs of three strains, Mycoplasma sp. strain 747, Spiroplasma mirum strain SMCA, and M. hominis strain 1257, suggested the presence of a plasmid with molecular weights of approximately 70...

Vital staining of Mycoplasma colonies was attempted because other dye visualization techniques kill the organisms and preclude reisolation for further studies. The lipophilic amphoteric dye Chlorazol Black E (CBE) was the most successful of 14 vital dyes tested on Mycoplasma hominis, M. pharyngis, M. fermentans, M. arthritidis, M. salivarium, M. pneumoniae, and L-forms of Staphylococcus aureus ...

The in vitro activity of trovafloxacin against 125 strains of Mycoplasma species and Ureaplasma urealyticum, including fluoroquinolone-susceptible and fluoroquinolone-resistant species, was compared to those of other fluoroquinolones, doxycycline, and erythromycin. The MIC at which 90% of isolates are inhibited for all fluoroquinolone-susceptible strains was 0.25 microg/ml. Whatever the associa...
