Mycobacterium massiliense is a nontuberculous mycobacterium associated with human infections. We report here the draft genome sequence of M. massiliense strain M159, isolated from the bronchial aspirate of a patient who had a pulmonary infection. This strain showed genotypic and in vitro resistance to a number of tetracyclines and beta-lactam antibiotics.
Mycobacterium chimaera is a nontuberculous mycobacterium species commonly found in the environment. Here, we report the first complete genome sequence of a strain from the investigation of invasive infections following open-heart surgeries that used contaminated LivaNova Sorin Stockert 3T heater-cooler devices.
Interest in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures has increased significantly over the last few decades. Billions of dollars are spent on these procedures annually. Although the associated risk is generally low, multiple cases of skin and soft tissue infections have been reported. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), in particular M. chelonae, M. fortuitum, and M. abscessus, have been inc...
Mycobacterium spp. and Rhodococcus equi are generally regarded as the main causes of lymphadenitis in pigs and wild boars. In Poland, mycobacterial submandibular lymphadenitis was first diagnosed in a wild boar in 2012 but Mycobacterium spp. infections are also present in the Polish population of European bison (Bison bonasus). The prevalence of lymphadenitis in Polish wild boars has been found...
The incidence of Mycobacterium avium-Mycobacterium intracellulare complex infections has increased in recent years primarily because a significant proportion of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients develop disseminated M. avium complex disease. In an effort to develop new tools to study these infections, we have produced eight monoclonal antibodies directed against M. avium. Western blot...
Mycobacterium szulgai is rarely found to be a cause of reported infection. Two thirds of cases were reported as pulmonary presentations, while the rest were infections of soft tissues or bone. In Thailand, few pulmonary infections due to M. szulgai have been reported. This is the first case of M. szulgai lymphadenitis confirmed by tissue culture. The patient presented with prolonged fever and t...
A case of abscess resulting from Mycobacterium kansasii, in the left thigh of a 53-year-old woman infected with the Human Immunodeficiency virus, is reported. Curiously, there was no pulmonary or systemic involvement as is usual with these Mycobacterium infections. The patient had CD4 T lymphocyte count of 257 cells/µL and a viral load of 60,154 copies. Despite presenting a relatively preserved...
Few recent reports have indicated that Mycobacterium massiliense causes various infections including respiratory infection. However, there is scarce information on the clinical significance, natural history of the infection, and therapeutic strategy. This report describes a case of an immunocompetent old man infected by M. massiliense that causes acute respiratory failure. In light of the gener...
Members of the Mycobacterium chelonae-abscessus complex represent Mycobacterium species that cause invasive infections in immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. We report the detection of a new pathogen that had been misidentified as M. chelonae with an atypical antimicrobial drug susceptibility profile. The discovery prompted a multicenter investigation of 26 patients. Almost all patient...
