Process Synthesis seeks to develop systematically process flowsheets that convert raw materials into desired products. In recent years, the optimization approach to process synthesis has shown promise in tackling this challenge. It requires the development of a network of interconnected units, the process superstructure, that represents the alternative process flowsheets. The mathematical model...

Composting has been recognized as one of the most cost effective and environmentally sound alternatives for organic wastes recycling from long and composted wastes have a potential to substitute inorganic fertilizers. We investigated the potential of composted tannery sludge for ornamental purposes and to examine the effects of two different composts and concentrations on ornamental Capsicum gr...

Pulp & Paper Canada T 93 107:4 (2006) ❘ ❘ ❘ 47 ISPOSAL OF SLUDGES produced from biological wastewater treatment facilities is costly for the pulp and paper industry. A novel biodrying process has been developed that raises the dryness of pulp and paper mill sludge to a solids level where it can be economically combusted in existing boilers [1]. The process involves an aerated biopile, in which ...

Laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) as models for wastewater treatment processes were used to identify glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs), which are thought to be responsible for the deterioration of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The SBRs (called Q and T), operated under alternating anaerobic-aerobic conditions typical for EBPR, generated mixed microbial commu...

Introduction: Bioremediation convertssoils pollutants to safe and non-toxic substance through metabolic activities of microorganisms. This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of bacteria on removal of phenanthrene and anthracene from polluted soils using chicken manure as an auxiliary substrate. Materials and Methods: First, uniformly-graded soils were transferred to the pilots, then...

An innovative and energy efficient sludge dewatering technology has been developed. The technology, impulse drying, involves briefly contacting the sludge under pressure with a heated surface. A unique feature of impulse drying is that the majority of moisture removal occurs as lipid water. A pilotand laboratory-scale demonstration was performed on low ash primary paper mill sludge. The pilot-s...

Introduction: The present study aimed to investigate the microbial quality of the produced vermicomposts and compare them with the existing standards. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted as a pilot-scale one in the laboratory school. Some perishable domestic wastewater mixed in a reactor, including food waste, vegetables and fruits, cow manure and sludge from wastewate...

This study applied a filter press for dewatering that uses pressure to reduce the water content of sludge generated in sewage treatment plants and evaluated improvement dewaterability under various coagulation conditions according type coagulants, amounts, pH conditions. The was by measurement time (TTF), change zeta potential, cake after dewatering. It found conditions, inorganic coagulants we...

Geobacter sulfurreducens can form electrically conductive biofilms, but the potential for conductivity through mixed-species biofilms has not been examined. A current-producing biofilm grown from a wastewater sludge inoculum was highly conductive with low charge transfer resistance even though microorganisms other than Geobacteraceae accounted for nearly half the microbial community.

This paper deals with thermal drying of wastewater sludges, whose management will become crucial in the forthcoming years. Sludges collected after mechanical dewatering in 5 different WWTPs are submitted to the same convective drying treatment in order to try finding some relations between the drying behaviours, the type of effluent and wastewater treatments. Results show dearly sludge drying r...
