A new algorithm (VOR-MFS) is presented for the solution of a generalized Hamiltonian model of point vortex dynamics in an arbitrary two-dimensional computational domain. The VOR-MFS algorithm utilizes the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) to obtain an approximation to the model Hamiltonian by solution of an appropriate boundary value problem. Unlike standard point vortex methods, VOR-MFS re...

The major facilitator superfamily (MFS) is one of the two largest families of membrane transporters found on Earth. It is present ubiquitously in bacteria, archaea, and eukarya and includes members that can function by solute uniport, solute/cation symport, solute/cation antiport and/or solute/solute antiport with inwardly and/or outwardly directed polarity. All homologous MFS protein sequences...

Context. We use Hubble Space Telescope photometry of six rich, compact star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with ages ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 Gyr, to derive the clusters’ stellar mass functions (MFs) at their half-mass radii. Aims. The LMC is an ideal environment to study stellar MFs, because it contains a large population of compact clusters at different evolutionary stages. We ...

The structures of membrane transporters are still mostly unsolved. Only recently, the first two high-resolution structures of transporters of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) were published. Despite the low sequence similarity of the two proteins involved, lactose permease and glycerol-3-phosphate transporter, the reported structures are highly similar. This leads to the hypothesis that ...

In this study we characterized the IgG antibodies against lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of Campylobacter jejuni in serum from patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS), C. jejuni enteritis and normal controls. In patients with GBS and MFS long-lasting titers of IgG1 and IgG3 antibodies against LPS from GBS and MFS associated C. jejuni were found. The subclass and cou...

We suggest a new method for the task of extractive text summarization using graph-based ranking algorithms. The main idea of this paper is to rank Maximal Frequent Sequences (MFS) in order to identify the most important information in a text. MFS are considered as nodes of a graph in term selection step, and then are ranked in term weighting step using a graphbased algorithm. We show that the p...

In this paper, the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) is extended to solve some special cases of the problem of transient heat conduction in functionally graded materials. First, the problem is transformed to a heat equation with constant coefficients using a suitable new transformation and then the MFS together with the Tikhonov regularization method is used to solve the resulting equation.

Peppermint has considerable commercial value and widely cultivated for essential oil production, especially menthol. The aim of this study was to determine the quantitative expression of pulegone reductase (pr), menthofuran synthase (mfs) and limonene synthase (ls) genes in menthol biosynthesis pathway in Mentha x piperita , using semiquantitative RT-PCR analysis and evaluating menthol producti...

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue with a prevalence of 1 in 3000 to 5000 individuals. The condition is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner with complete penetrance but demonstrates variable expression with significant intraand interfamilial variation. Approximately 25% of patients do not have a family history and represent sporadic, new mutations for t...

Cyclic contraction and relaxation of plasmodial strands of Physarum polycephalum were measured under both isotonic and isometric conditions, and their relation to changes in microfilament (MF) morphology was investigated. The contraction-relaxation rhythm of a strand segment was insignificant and irregular immediately after isolation from the mother plasmodium. It became regular half an hour la...
