Maximal monotone operator theory is about to turn (or just has turned) fifty. I intend to briefly survey the history of the subject. I shall try to explain why maximal monotone operators are both interesting and important—culminating with a description of the remarkable progress made during the past decade.

Various search directions used in interior-point-algorithms for the SDP (semidefinite program) and the monotone SDLCP (semide nite linear complementarity problem) are characterized by the intersection of a maximal monotone a ne subspace and a maximal and strictly antitone a ne subspace. This observation provides a uni ed geometric view over the existence of those search directions.

We establish variational principles for monotone and maximal bifunctions of Brøndsted-Rockafellar type by using our characterization of bifunction’s maximality in reflexive Banach spaces.
