P Cotton, by Nellie Mae Rowe (1900–1982), is a work of folk art that captures Rowe’s experiences as an African American woman living in rural Georgia, United States. Nellie Mae Rowe was born on July 4, 1900, as the ninth of ten children. The family lived on a rented farm 20 miles south of Atlanta. Her father, a farmer and blacksmith, was born a slave in 1854; her mother, born the year after Pre...

We study here, within the density-functional theory, the magnetic anisotropy energy ~MAE! in Ni2MnGa which is a prototype of a magnetic shape-memory alloy. We calculate the MAE, which is a key property for the magnetic shape-memory effect, for tetragonal structure with different ratios of the c and a lattice constants, reproducing the experimental easy axes both in compression and elongation of...

Irreversible white spot lesion (WSL) occurs in up to 50% of patients during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, orthodontic adhesives need to be able to inhibit or reduce bacterial growth in order to prevent or minimize WSL. This study evaluated the antibacterial effect and shear bond strength (SBS) of a resin-based orthodontic adhesive containing the antibacterial monomer 2-methacryloxylethyl he...

A native polysaccharides (RRP) was isolated from Radix Rehmanniae Preparata by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). In the method, the optimized conditions were: the ratio of raw material to water was 1:50 (g/ml); microwave irradiation power was 550W; extraction temperature was 60°C; extraction time was 30min. As a result, the average yield of RRP using MAE was 9.35%, and R.S.D. was 2.15%. Furt...

1015 From everyday experience, we intuitively know that visual attention enables us to select from a cluttered visual scene only those objects or events of immediate relevance. In the case of vision, it is well established that attention modulates neural activity in several areas within visual cortex1–3, including V1, the earliest cortical stage4–7. This attentional modulation seems to involve ...

Various extraction techniques were applied in the extraction of the biologically active constituents. The methods employed were traditional maceration extraction, microwave-assisted extraction(MAE), and ultrasound extraction (UE). Compared to the maceration extraction, MAE and UE methods provided high extraction yield, requiring short time frames and less labour. Microwave irradiation is a prov...

UNLABELLED In a novel 'zigzag motion' display, random dots made alternate long and short jumps, 10 mm downward and 1 mm to the right. The zigs and zags were either at right angles (differing by 90 degrees) or in opposite directions (180 degrees). RESULT The perceived direction of motion varied with the viewing distance or spatial scale. During close-up [or distant] viewing the display appeare...

An efficient microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was employed in simultaneous extraction of luteolin and apigenin from tree peony pod. The MAE procedure was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and compared with other conventional extraction techniques of macerate extraction (ME) and heat reflux extraction (HRE). The optimal conditions of MAE were as follows: employing 7...

We study in this paper the consequences of using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) as a measure of quality for regression models. We show that finding the best model under the MAPE is equivalent to doing weighted Mean Absolute Error (MAE) regression. We show that universal consistency of Empirical Risk Minimization remains possible using the MAPE instead of the MAE.

This study investigated the spatial frequency selectivity of the human visual motion system using the technique of adaptation in which motion aftereffect (MAE) duration was taken as an index of aftereffect magnitude. Eight observers adapted to two vertically oriented, oppositely drifting, luminance-defined gratings that were spatially separated in the vertical dimension. The spatial frequency o...
