Nature has provided us with a range of reactive nanoscale platforms, in the form of protein cage architectures such as viral capsids and the cages of ferritin-like proteins. Protein cage architectures have clearly demarcated exterior, interior, and interface surfaces consisting of precisely located chemical functionalities. In the present work, we demonstrate that the small heat shock protein (...

Challenges and opportunities:•Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials can provide new platforms for photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. The study of MOFs in such applications is still its infancy, so comprehensive multifaceted research required.•The lack stability when utilized aqueous reaction solutions remains a significant challenge. careful selection metal-oxo clusters organ...

Supercritical fluids are quickly becoming a realistic alternative to conventional organic media used in the extraction of metal ions from aqueous phases. However, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is complicated by the inherent low pH (~ 3) associated with CO2 in contact with water. However, we have recently shown that selective extraction of the metal ions can be achieved through the contro...

We propose that the apparent catalytic inactivity of Mnand Fe-substituted superoxide dismutases (SODs) reflects E°s that are either lower (Fe-sub-(Mn)SOD) or higher (Mn-sub-(Fe)SOD) than those of native Feor Mn-SODs. In support, we show that the E° of Fe-sub-(Mn)SOD (Fe substituted into Mn-SOD protein) is -240 mV vs NHE, almost 0.5 V lower than our E° of 220 mV for Fe-SOD. The E° of Fe-sub-(Mn)...

The H-cluster is a complex bridged metal assembly at the active site of [FeFe]-hydrogenases that consists of a [4Fe-4S] subcluster bridged to a 2Fe-containing subcluster with unique nonprotein ligands, including carbon monoxide, cyanide, and a dithiolate ligand of unknown composition. Specific biosynthetic gene products (HydE, HydF, andHydG) responsible for the biosynthesis of the H-cluster and...
