β-Eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) is known to show super-ionic conductivity above 700 K. We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements in β-eucryptite over 300-900 K and calculated the phonon spectrum using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD simulations were used to interpret the inelastic neutron spectra at high temperatures. The calculated diffusion coefficient for Li showed...

High quality graphitized graphene has been successfully synthesized by solid-exfoliation of graphite and a subsequent wet chemical process. The as-obtained graphene exhibits charge-discharge behaviour quite different from that of reduced graphene oxide and shows enhanced cycling and rate performance compared with commercial mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs) for lithium ion batteries.

The internal resistance is the key parameter for determining power, energy efficiency and lost heat of a lithium ion cell. Precise knowledge of this value is vital for designing battery systems for automotive applications. Internal resistance of a cell was determined by current step methods, AC (alternating current) methods, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and thermal loss methods. The o...

The lithium ion-ion interactions in protic ionic liquids can be very different compared to those in aprotic ionic liquids. In this study we show that, for equal lithium ion concentration, the lithium coordination number in protic ionic liquids is lower than that in aprotic ones. This lower coordination makes lithium ions more "free" to move in protic ionic liquids and it might have an important...

Reversible dendrite-free low-areal-capacity lithium metal electrodes have recently been revived, because of their pivotal role in developing beyond lithium ion batteries. However, there have been no reports of reversible dendrite-free high-areal-capacity lithium metal electrodes. Here we report on a strategy to realize unprecedented stable cycling of lithium electrodeposition/stripping with a h...

The possibility to modify the adsorption properties of a porous silica/Mo(112) film by controlling its work function has been studied by a combined STM and density-functional theory approach. While the original film is inert towards metal adsorption, Au atoms and clusters can be stabilized on the surface after Li doping. The Li atoms penetrate the topmost silica layer and bind as Li+ cations at...

We introduce a novel design of carbon-silicon core-shell nanowires for high power and long life lithium battery electrodes. Amorphous silicon was coated onto carbon nanofibers to form a core-shell structure and the resulted core-shell nanowires showed great performance as anode material. Since carbon has a much smaller capacity compared to silicon, the carbon core experiences less structural st...

A novel [3]rotaxane composed of two 25-membered crownophanes and one axle molecule having two anthryl end groups was successfully synthesized via covalent bond formation followed by aminolysis, and can incorporate caesium ion into the space between the two macrocycles as a 1 : 1 sandwich-type complex, whereas it makes a 1 : 2 complex with lithium ion.

We developed two-step solution-phase reactions to form hybrid materials of Mn(3)O(4) nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets for lithium ion battery applications. Selective growth of Mn(3)O(4) nanoparticles on RGO sheets, in contrast to free particle growth in solution, allowed for the electrically insulating Mn(3)O(4) nanoparticles to be wired up to a current collector through the...

We present the positronium formation cross sections for a positron colliding with lithium and sodium for the collision energies from 0.01 eV up to 20 eV by the hyperspherical close-coupling method. For Li, our results agree with the experimental data and with other calculations. Our results for Na remain in agreement with previous close-coupling calculations, but do not support the latest exper...
